Yesterday I visited Long Beach to see their bus operation. When I got there I saw a few newer Gillig Phantoms numbered 169-170 and 173-175. While I was on the N15 I also went past the garage and saw a few other Gilligs as well as one cutaway. I was wondering if anybody has a roster for their buses. I was also wondering at what time of day has the most amount of service.

nycbusfan,

You say you'd like a Long Beach (NY) bus roster?

Well, I can't give you the latest but I can sure take you back a few years with the first photo below being a factory shot of four 1936 Mack Model 6CQ3S's readying for delivery to Long Beach as fleet numbers 46 to 49.

The second photo (a gem) was taken on Park Street and Putnam Boulevard in Atlantic Beach in April of 1930 and is a 1927 Mack Model 'AB' carrying fleet number 7.

Enjoy!

The schedules for their routes is on the internet. If you do a search for Long Beach, NY governement, that should do it, since the buses are run by same.

Thanks for all the info everybody. When I was there all I saw were 2003 Gilligs in service. Are the 1997 buses only used as spares?

Bob,

I've been looking over the Long Beach roster and I see one item that make no sense to me, and that's the TRCCORP Trolley Bus unless it was one of those 'make believe' trolley cars like we have in Beverly Hills.

I can't explain it but for some reason Long Beach never had a real trolley system in the days when traction ruled the road.

BTW; your roster also brought back memories of the Blue and White Dodge school buses that the city was using for transit in the 50's - I could never figure that one out!

If my memory serves me correctly, I believe that they were equipped with transit style four slat doors.

Here is the Long Beach trolley bus #1 referred to in the above roster - it is the same as the one in Beverly Hills!

That's not the same "trolley;" the one in the photo is a Chance American Heritage AH-28, introduced in 1993.

Long Beach had only one RTS?

Michael,

The pictured trolley may not be the one that is referred to in the roster, but it sure is Long Beach number 1 as taken right from their website!

Frankly, I don't know what a 'TRCORP' is to begin with!

Long Beach did buy only one new T7W-604 in July of 1983 which was numbered 156, but I seem to remember that they had a couple of the original sloped roof jobs at some point which might have been bought used because I see nothing in production for them.

I think Hertz was selling off a lot of the originals in the mid eighties (and they had plenty of them in New York).

BTW; the Beverly Hills tram is also a Chance.

Regards to the family.

I don't know what TRCORP is, either. "Trolley Replicas Corp."?

I'm not disputing that #1 is Long Beach's trolley, but it's definitely newer than the 1985 unit on the roster. Thanks for the info on the used RTSes.

I went down to the vault. TRCORP trolley was found in a 1980s APTA Vehicle Inventory Book for Long Beach NY.

According to the report TRCORP stands for Transi Corp (FLTP(?) acquired by Collins and renamed).

Collins used to build small buses back in the 1980s.

ps - Long Beach only had the one new RTS. It never had any second hand RTSs.

I don't think my memory has failed me on the RTS's.

However, what I remember may have been a demonstrator.

I'm new here, so please excuse me for reviving this old thread. I've read many of the posts here on the several Long Beach operations and have seen the wonderful photos.

As a Rockaway kid, I recall fondly the Green Bus operations there and read Mr. Alan Linsky's historical notes with great interest. As I spent some 30 years as a railroader, public transportation has always been an interest.

What I'm seeking here is some information on the old Long Beach Railway Company. It was posted here once that there was no trolley operation in Long Beach, and that's not quite true. Between 1923 and 1926, the Long Beach Railway Company, which was owned by the Mayor William Reynolds operated a fleet of perhaps four gasoline trolleys around town.

I've found only two photos of the rail buses that are of the 30-passenger AB type rail car manufactured by Mack in the early 1920's. I am not sure if Mack built the Long Beach cars, as they have no record of them. They may have been Reo buses modified by an upstate firm. They look to have Brill bodies. One is numbered "13".

These are simply my observations and guesses. I'm hoping someone here knows more than I do or has something they can share.

It appears that the trolleybus line was constructed to fulfill an election promise; the unpaved streets of the newly annexed West End made auto and bus travel difficult. The line quickly outlived its usefulness as the real estate boom of the 20's developed the town and paved its streets. By 1926, the fleet, which was probably bought used to begin with was dilapidated and was abandoned.

Anyone know anything about this one, or can anyone direct me to someone who might have information or pictures?
