Finally ...

Muni chief outlines crackdown on fare evaders

Quote:
The San Francisco Municipal Railway is losing "tens of millions of dollars a year" in uncollected fares, the city's transportation chief told The Chronicle.

The acknowledgement comes as Muni officials are exploring ways to increase revenue through new taxes, fees and fines to address escalating operating costs and a deficit projected to add up to more than $1 billion over the next five years.

"We are not going to put our hand out for more money until we know we are collecting the money that is rightly due us," said Municipal Transportation Agency Executive Director Nathaniel Ford.

Fare evasion has been a long-standing problem at Muni and, whether officially sanctioned or not, has become part of the culture. Muni managers know it. Drivers know it. So do passengers.

The loss of fare money can be blamed on intentional evasion, malfunctioning equipment, understaffing and confusing payment policies, Ford said.

Quote:
"It drives me crazy, just nuts," Eddie Peterson said as he settled onto a 38-Geary bus heading from Union Square to the Richmond District. "I see people get on the bus every day without paying. Not just sometimes, but every day, and it's not fair."

The 40-year-old retail worker, who buys a monthly FastPass, said he is particularly irked because Muni raised fares this month.

Hmmm... Tough times on everyone's budgets? MUNI now announces its tough and stringent policy? Not at all attuned to the feelings of
the fare evaders? Where and when were the productive, "public input" meetings? (Dudes! Like they have First and Fourteenth Amendment
Rights here!) Whoa! What ever became of, The Summer Of Love?

Bah! MUNI a running dog lackey of "Greedy Captalist Pigs! Just like the old days. It is all the fault of the Illuminati Bankers...
