The situation with the proposed Renaissance Square at Main and Clinton in Rochester,NY, which includes a new bus terminal is in a state of flux and could die thanks to the kindergarten bickering between County Executive Maggie (Maggot) Brooks and the City Council, leaving Regional Transit buses jamming up Main Street and the buses of Trailways and Greyhound looking for a new home, probably back of the former main Post Office just off of Joseph Avenue near the Amtrak Station on Central Avenue. At the old Midtown Plaza where the intercity buses still operate, but for who knows how long is anyone's guess, I have seen close to thirty buses between RTS, Trailways, Blue Bird, Greyhound and others in the terminal at the same time.It seems to me that when a government shows contempt for the taxpayers, it DOEs deserve OVERTHROW as far as I am concerned and this nonsense with the bus terminal is a perfect example of it. Here is a golden opportunity to get the city buses off of Main Street at the intersections of Main and Clinton and Main and State and these morons at both Rochester City Hall and Monroe County Hall are about to squander it.

The bus terminal might already be finished if the transit authority would just focus on its core purpose of providing transportation and stopped trying to get into the urban redevelopment business. Just look at this (now outdated) description of the project from the Democrat & Chronicle website:

Quote:
After years of debating and planning, a major downtown project is beginning to take shape. Renaissance Square would combine a performing arts center and a Monroe Community College satellite campus with an underground bus terminal. Estimated to cost $230 million, the complex would be the biggest and most expensive public project in the region's history. It is hoped the center would open in 2009

RGRTA has no one to blame but themselves for letting the scope of this project wander so far away from its initial purpose. I also think that the idea of an underground bus station is a horrible one - I have yet to see such a station that didn't become a dark, fume-filled cavern over time. Much better to build an above-ground facility that allow natural light to brighten the station, even in a cold-weather climate like western New York.

The intercity bus lines are going in a temporary facility to be build behind the old main post office located across the street from the Amtrak station on Central Avenue, just off of Joseph Avenue. That will but Greyhound and Trailways and Amtrak within easy walking distance from each other, two of them in the same terminal, no less. They are to vacate Midtown Plaza in 60 days, after 47 years in the same location. The RTS routes that connected with Greyhound and Trailways at Midtown have all since been moved out of there.
