One good use for the autoworkers losing their jobs would be to re-employ them to build rail passenger cars, both for long distance, intercity, and commuter to provide the passenger railroads with the equipment they need to do their job of moving people around the country. Amtrak, for example has a desperate need for new equipment as well as people to repair the wrecks that are still repairable and these people have the talents needed to do the job. While the highways are still an important part of the transportation infrastructure, the railroads which have been neglected ever since Eisenhower came up with the Interstate Highway Program, need to be beefed up to take some of the load off the overloaded highways and airways. This is where new passenger equipment for Amtrak, added track capacity for both freight and passenger services comes in. As to where the people to do this job would come from, laid off autoworkers and others who have lost their jobs. In addition to rail passenger equipment, these people could also be utilized to provide bus companies with first rate equipment for intercity service as well as commuter services best performed by buses and by having buses and trains work together in more places than they do now. While the automobile will still have its role to place, but when properly used, it can complement the other modes of travel very nicely via the park n ride lots and other such facilities that bring bus, train, and auto together for the trip to and from work. This could go a long way to solving a lot of the problems with our transportation system which IS broken and HAS BEEN broken for quite some time. That worthless moron who left office in January did little or nothing about it and with a new administration, we have a golden opportunity to fix a broken transportation system and using laid off workers and others who have lost their jobs in this role could alleviate some of the social costs of unemployment, something the CEO's doing the firings should have been considering before doing it. Here is a golden opportunity to make our transportation system the finest in the world as it once was and CAN be again.
