First, you request your transfer at the time you pay your fare on the first bus, then pay the fee when boarding the second bus. If you need a third bus, have the driver of the second bus punch the transfer accordingly so that you can reach your destination on the third bus. If transferring between MetroRail and Metrobus, a one way rail ticket can serve as a transfer and it is free. NFTA has some passes good for unlimited rides that allow you to dispense with the transfers completely. They are also good on MetroRail. Say you are going from Tonawanda to Williamsville, for example. First bus would be the #25 Delaware Avenue bus which you would ride from Tonawanda to Kenmore Avenue right on the Buffalo City Line, then catch a No.30 Kenmore-River Road Bus to Main Street (eastbound), where you hook up with the No.48 Williamsville bus unless your No.30 bus is one scheduled to continue onto Williamsville enroute to the Airport, in which case you just give the transfer to the driver of that bus and pay the fee, plus additional zone fares as appropriate.
