Town Supervisors Envision Rapid Transit For Route 110
BY ALFONSO A. CASTILLO
3:03 PM EDT, April 17, 2009

The town supervisors of Babylon and Huntington on Friday unveiled plans for an ambitious and innovative new transit system along the Route 110 corridor that they say would create thousands of new jobs and significantly reduce traffic congestion.

The proposed Bus Rapid Transit System (BRT) is tied to plans by the MTA to open the dormant Republic Station at the intersection of Route 110 and Conklin Street in Farmingdale. Different than standard buses, BRT features smaller buses, fewer stops, and dedicated lanes that ensure quick and reliable service, officials said.

State Sen. Charles Fuschillo (R-Merrick) and the MTA helped the towns secure $150,000 to fund a forthcoming study on the new transit system.

"Easing travel along the Route 110 corridor through improved mass transit will help make the area more accessible and encourage continued economic development, which will attract new businesses and create new jobs for local residents," Fuschillo said in a statement.

Babylon Supervisor Steve Bellone and Huntington Supervisor Frank Petrone said the system would one day allow people to ride a train into the Republic Station and then quickly board a bus that would take them to their offices along Route 110 - currently home to 135,000 jobs, or 20 percent of Suffolk's work force.

The towns have already opened the bidding process for various planning stages in the project.
