Wow - I didn't know those older New Flyers were still around. I thought the single-door NFI suburbans replaced all of these.

952, 955, 957, and the NFs in New Britain survived the 7XX typhoon.

Any older equipment in Hartford is usually only seen during weekday rush hours. New Haven, on the other hand, seems to operate the Classics seven days a week, and it is common to spot them anywhere in their system. This past Wednesday, I observed 9638 covering an outbound J4 trip to Waterbury, and a few minutes later 9617 leaving Waterbury for New Haven. The Classics add a little variety to the equipment seen around here, and personally I prefer the older paint scheme over the boring blue of the New Flyers.

9638 is alive. Wow, I thought they wouldn't even try to revive it from the fire.

So out of curiosity, any update on that tender CT Transit sent out for new buses?

It appears that the delay in awarding the Connecticut bid is due to the state not yet coming up with their share of the funding for the purchase. Of course this has not stopped the politicians from bragging about the hybrid buses which will be included in this order.

The rumors have been going around about who the apparent successful bidders are. It appears that the award will be split as follows:

30 foot low floor transit buses - Gillig
35 and 40 foot low floor transit buses - New Flyer
45 foot high floor commuter coaches - MCI
60 foot articulated low floor transit buses - Nova

It appears that only 20 or so buses will be hybrid models.

It the bid is awarded as suspected, New Flyer will still be the dominate bus in Connecticut. It would be nice though to see Nova making a comeback in the fleet. The (MCI) Classic was the dominate bus in the CT Transit fleet during the 1990's, and the Nova Classic is still going strong here, especially in New Haven. At least it appears that there will be some variety. I'll update if more information comes along.

At least the new NFI buses will be the restyled model, since the LF is no longer available for new orders.

I wonder how Orion feels about being shut out by virtually all of it's major US competitors on this bid - however they have enough on their plate as it is right now.

The big loss was the 35 and 40-foot buses - the rest of the order is likely small potatoes by comparison. It’s not surprising that New Flyer would fight hard to keep this since they have been the state's primary bus supplier since 2001.

Absolutely no fight for different buses. I would've love to see NABIs in the fleet; however, we'll see what will happen.

The Connecticut bid has been awarded to the builders as I previously mentioned. The cost and delivery breakdown is as follows:

Gillig - 30' Low Floor diesel - $352,090 - 540 day delivery
30' Low Floor hybrid - $550,090 - 540 day delivery

New Flyer - 35' Low Floor diesel XD35 - $376,349 - 507 day delivery
35' Low Floor hybrid XDE35 - $560,349 - 507 day delivery
40' Low Floor diesel XD40 - $383,036 - 365 day delivery
40' Low Floor hybrid XDE40 - $567036 - 365 day delivery

- expedited delivery
35' Low Floor diesel D35LFR - $337,682 - delivery prior
to end of Q2 / 2010
35' Low Floor diesel bus engines EPA 2007 - $28,000
The above lists a quanity of 20 vehicles. I am
assuming that these will go to New Britain.

MCI - 45' Coach D4500 - $524,263 - 270 day delivery

Nova Bus - 60' Low Floor diesel LFS - $619,021 - 357 day delivery
60' Low Floor hybrid LFS - $813,100 - 469 day delivery

Based on the above schedule, the coaches and New Britain buses should be delivered next summer, while the rest of the first year order will arrive between fall 2010 and summer 2011.

Interesting that CT Transit is going with the more expensive Excelsior model instead of the restyled version of the standard low-floor bus they have been purchasing for the past nine years.

Interesting that they went Xcelsior and there is variety, however little it is. Too bad that I'll be graduating high school by the time the LFSA's come in. Kinda crush my spirits. Oh well. On another note, I just made a new roster and working on a retired roster of buses. Here is the roster.

A handful of the D40HF's are being used in New Haven. While there this past week, I spotted #944 on a "B" Whalley Avenue run. I also was able to photograph #947 and #950 (which is still in the original paint scheme) at the garage.
