Pictured below is fleet # 317 - a 1947 GM TDH 4507 (ser# 1117) and one of twenty (300 to 319) that were scheduled for delivery to the North Shore Bus Company of Flushing, New York in August of that year.
However, just as the buses were being readied for transport from GM's Pontiac, Michigan plant, North Shore turned in its franchises and was immediately taken over by the City of New York Board of Transportation.
North Shore was a long time operator and a very important cog in eastern Queens County transit.
This, by the way, was the first foray by the city into Queens bus operations which created the Queens Bus Division.
Notice that # 317 already has the city logo, is equipped with passenger safety split sashes and is signed for Jamaica.

Good post, Mr. L (as usual)!!!
I remember those buses working the Q17 when I was quite young (i.e. 5-6 years of age).
By that time (1962-1963) those Old Looks were truly "old looking" and pretty smoky, especially when accelerating from the bus stop at Horace Harding & 164th St.
By comparison, the TDH-5106's operated by the TA and QTC seemed more modern-looking. |
