I noticed that most of the buses that Public Service Coordinated Transport had in service during its final years under that name were inherited by NJ Transit after having worn the Transport of New Jersey name for several years. This included several groups of SDM5301 and 5302 suburban "fishbowls" some of them with the 8V71 engine, others with the 6V71, plus a number of TDM"new looks" of several models. Given the durability of many of these buses, it is not surprising that NJ Transit and predecessors got more than 20 years" service out of them. Try that with the junk plying the streets today and today's 'plastic buses", one would be lucky to get half that out of many of today's offerings as far as buses go. When Public Service chose what buses they were going to run, I thought they chose well for the most part. At least the manufacturer did not have design concept rammed down his throat in those days. Customers and manufacturers worked together on bus specifications and what bus models were best for a given job. I believe Public Service's roster is a prime example of a carrier that chose well and worked with the manufacturer on what they wanted in the buses they bought. |

D. J.,
It has to be remembered that just as Fifth Avenue Coach in New York originally built their own buses (right in upper Manhattan actually) so did Public Service Coordinated of New Jersey in as many as three different shops throughout the state.
Both companies had close ties with Yellow Coach (GM) in the mid twenties and both companies worked hand in hand with Yellow engineers to develope buses for their specific needs.
PSCNJ in particular was by far Yellow's largest customer ever and remained so through the entire GM Old Look era.
Among other companies that tried their hands at bus building were St. Louis Public Service and Los Angeles Motor Coach although neither was as deeply involved.
Unfortunately, those times are gone and operators today must rely upon what comes off the showroom floor so to speak with the exception of differing options of course.
