An examination of the May 2009 NYCT + MTAB roster indicates that the once-huge NYC RTS fleet continues to diminish at a fairly rapid pace.
Out of a grand total of 5566 RTS's in NYC delivered by 3 builders (4850 for NYCT and 716 for the PBL's) only 1708 units remain in service today.
Of the 1708 RTS-06 units currently in operation with NYCT and MTAB: 1517 work for NYCT, while 191 operate for MTAB.
The MTAB RTS fleet consists of 159 veteran TMC RTS-06's plus 32 younger Nova RTS-06's.
The TMC's are a mix of reassigned NYCT units delivered in 1990 in the 8000-8399 series plus ex-PBL RTS-06's originally purchased by NYCDOT in 1993-4.
All MTAB TMC RTS-06's are diesels: alternative-fuel TMC RTS's (i.e. methanol, CNG) once operated by TCC and CBC have been purged from the active MTAB roster.
The Nova RTS-06's are ex-NYCT units delivered in 1995-6 in the 9300-9349 series.
LGA Depot has the largest RTS fleet among the 8 MTAB depots with 90 units (including all 32 Nova RTS-06's). BP, FRK, JFK and SC have smaller RTS fleets, while CP, YON, and ECH have none.
The NYCT fleet consists of 1292 Nova RTS-06's delivered from 1995-1999, plus 257 TMC RTS-06's delivered from 1990-1994; all are diesels.
As befits the borough in which GMC RTS-04's made their debut back in August 1981, the Brooklyn Division boasts the largest concentration of RTS-06's with 828 units; they operate more RTS's than all the other 4 divisions put together.
ENY is the all-city RTS champion (223), followed by FLA (206), UP (177), FP (125), and GA (115); all-CNG JG Depot is the sole Brooklyn Division depot to have no RTS's.
The Queens Division has 363 RTS-06's, with JA taking the lead (196) and QV following (167); CS Depot still remains an Orion stronghold.
The Manhattan Division claims 307 RTS-06's based at MJQ (177), 126 St. (66) and MV (64); 100 St. Depot is all New Flyer D60HF.
The Bronx Division only has 19 RTS-06's, all based at WF. AMS, GH, and KB are mostly Orion (plus artics at KB and GH).
The local fleets of the 2 Staten Island Divsion Depots now are all Orion, without a single RTS in operation.
Out of a grand total of 5566 RTS's in NYC delivered by 3 builders (4850 for NYCT and 716 for the PBL's) only 1708 units remain in service today.
As with the Fishbowls and Flx New Looks that preceded them, the RTS is fast becoming an "Historical Bus of NYC": love them or hate them, bus fans must appreciate them while they're still running the streets of The Big Apple.
