Miami Herald - `Transit freak' swiped buses for kicks

Quote:
James Harris loves public buses so much, he stole one from a Miami-Dade depot last month and, wearing a genuine uniform, chauffeured unsuspecting fare-paying passengers around South Beach for hours, police and government officials said Thursday.

When Harris, 18, was arrested a few days later, he posted bail -- and promptly stole a second bus.

''He's a real transit freak,'' said Derrick Gordon, assistant director for bus operations.

It should be pretty embarassing to Miami-Dade Transit that he was able to just drive buses out of their depots without anyone being aware of it, and that he drove around 'for hours' even after other drivers spotted him and knew what he was up to.

I wonder if this guy is related to the Surface Transportation System (NY) driver that years ago decided to take off to Florida with what was then a pretty new 1947 GM TDH 4507.

I don't remember whether he actually made it all the way or was picked up by the police in route.

I guess he must have just snapped! - working for STS could do that!

Mr. Linsky,

About 1972 or 1973, a guy stole a GBL bus, a higher number 500, like 530 or so, and tried to fuel up for an "unscheduled" charter trip to Florida. He was caught by a fueler in the TA ENY garage, trying to get diesel without a voucher.

I wonder if anybody else remembers this?
