While the NFT 7400s originally came with the three piece rear windows, I noticed that the NFT retrofitted many of those buses with a yellow metal strip down the center of the rear window so as to divide the large panel into two pieces, with the strip supported by light colored rubber gaskets. Does anyone know of any other transit systems that used this same trick on 5301s to go from 3 piece rear windows to four piece rear windows? I thought the NFT's trick for dividing this window on the 7400s was need, though a number of these buses retained their three piece rear windows, 7437 being one of them and I rode that once or twice. The 7400s were configured to seat 49 pasengers in a standard transit layout instead of 53.

Dieseljim,

Briefly, the original GM 47 and 5300's came through with the three piece rear window design as you mention (one large center pane and a narrow section on each side.

However, it was found that certain stresses caused the large glass to crack diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner.

GM's fix for the problem was the two piece center section with the rubber gasket down the middle.

This was not the only stress related problem with the 'New Looks';

A small portion of the very forward most sections of the transom or standee windows were removed and replaced with sheet metal on the outside and strengthened structure underneath.

It was eventually realized that the vast window areas substantially reduced support for the roof which tended to shimmy.

You may clearly see the before and after in the photos below with the patch showing very prominently on #538.
