Metro Magazine

Greyhound purchased 33 Prevost X3-45 vehicles for its new BoltBus operation and an additional 17 for its line-haul fleet.

The new BoltBus coaches are equipped with a WiFi router, video entertainment systems and 110-volt plug-in capability, as well as comfortable seats with extra legroom. The entire BoltBus fleet is wheelchair-accessible.

BoltBus, headquartered in Secaucus, N.J., offers long-range express commuter service between New York, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Boston. At least one $1 fare is available each day on every scheduled run. Other fares vary depending on travel dates, overall passenger demand and the number of advance booking days.

One of the new Poodle X3-45s was sitting on the side of the Garden State Parkway last night.

They are very nice looking buses. Imagine if all of those buses went to Greyhound instead of most being siphoned to BoltBus. That would have been a needed shot in the arm.

Let me tell you something;

Greyhound better get its act together as quickly as possible because, pretty soon, a lot of people will no longer be able to afford the price of an airline ticket! (I could be one of them!).

The pundits have already speculated that a large portion of the population will seek alternative methods of travel, and this really sets the scene for Greyhound to replay its past.

Would anyone have ever believed this?

By trying out the Prevost coaches, I think Greyhound may have found the perfect replacement for that G4500 piece of junk they had assembled in Mexico rather than in the US and/or Canada. I have ridden on a similar coach operated by Adirondack/New York Trailways and it's not a bad bus at all. The overhead compartments could be a tad bigger for certain carry on luggage, though. Now if Prevost could do a 45 foot version of the beloved Scenicruiser, but with washroom in rear, they would REALLY have something there.

Though this purchase for a total of 50 Prevost X3-45 coaches by Greyhound may seem token to their by the hundreds purchase of MCI coaches, I see the purchase of these buses by Greyhound as a possible hint to MCI to "Either straighten up and fly right, or we will take our business elsewhere," in reference to the poor quality of some models that MCI has been turning out in recent years, particularly the G4500 models. MCI even offers a 3500 model that is the rough equivelant of the MC5/5B of yesteryear. Let's hope that one has not turned out to be junk, too.

D. J.,

I would say that your reasoning that Greyhound's interest in Prevost may be precipitated by problems with their MCI 4500's has vailidity although I know of no general outcry by other MCI customers.

Greyhound, from day one, has tried many different brands even when they were closely tied to GM.

As you say, 50 buses to Greyhound is a drop in the bucket so I wouldn't put too much credence in this transaction.

Why not do a modernized MC7 as well as modernized versions of older, proven models that have proven more durable than the offerings in recent years.That MC5s,7,s8s, and 9s are still running in commercial service is a tribute to the durability and quality built into these buses. And there is little that is PLASTIC about them either. They do not necessarily have to be stick shift equipped either. Gray Coach Lines had some automatic equipped MC7s in their fleet and I rode one from Cleveland to Buffalo back in the 1980s. Here is an example of what a reliable, durable bus should be. One that will NOT catch fire while going down the road or other such needless nonsense as plaguing certain of today's models.

The BoltBus X3's and their 17 other counterparts found mostly in the Northeast out of AC (Pleasantville), Philly, and NYC promote the improved image of GLI and also work well on their heavy line-runs (NYC-AC and the Northeastern services out of NYC). I actually was made aware by a Bolt driver in October when our X3's on-board computer froze up that the X3's are very sensitive to driving styles and does shut down often - something GLI better look into with this upcoming order.
