Nobody's saying it won't happen, but the TTC transit workers union is promising the public 48 hours' notice in the event of a strike.
That's something the union now says won't occur for at least another week, even though the legal strike deadline is Tuesday and the city is moving ahead on its contingency planning.
Talks were progressing well yesterday and were expected to continue through the weekend, officials on both sides said yesterday.
"It may take two or even three more weeks to work through all our issues, but we're committed to sticking with it as long as progress is being made," said union president Bob Kinnear.
The union walked away from bargaining on Monday citing lack of progress on the issue of benefits for injured workers. But there has been "substantial movement" since the two sides went back to the table Thursday, Kinnear said.
The announcement yesterday of a special session of city council Monday to discuss contingency plans in the event of a strike has not changed the positive atmosphere around the talks, both sides insisted. The meeting was called because councillors will be gathered anyway to discuss budget issues. It is not a sign of trouble in bargaining, said TTC chair Adam Giambrone.
The meeting will debate bylaw amendments to establish emergency routes and other contingency plans if there's a walkout.
The TTC also plans to meet tomorrow with CUPE Local 2, which represents 500 electrical and communications workers who voted Thursday in favour of a strike. |
