A pre-production meeting was held this week for the New Flyer Xcelsior buses being purchased as part of the Connecticut procurement. Representatives of CT Transit and New Flyer began ironing out the details for the construction of the buses as well as the delivery schedule. During the first year of this procurement there will be 14 - XDE40 (hybrid) buses built for New Haven, as well as 17 - XD35 (clean diesel) and 17 - XDE35 (hybrid) buses for Waterbury.

The diesel power plant package will be the Cummins ISL engine coupled to an Allison B400R transmission, and the hybrids will have a Cummins ISB engine coupled to an Allison EV40 Hybrid drive unit. To meet 2010 emissions standards, all buses will be equipped with a selective catalytic reduction system (SCR). This system uses diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), a mixture of urea and water, which is injected into the exhaust system. The urea heats up to form ammonia, which reacts with the nitrogen oxides from the engine exhaust, and converts the oxides to nitrogen and water, enabling a significant reduction in exhaust emissions. A reservoir at the right rear corner of the bus holds 10 gallons of DEF, which is injected to the roof mounted exhaust.

The buses will also have M.A.N. axles with all wheel disc brakes, as well as Wabco ABS and traction control. Climate control is provided by a Thermo King RLF-1 series AC unit. This is a new roof mounted model, designed specifically for the Xcelsior. The bus electrical will be controlled by a Vansco multiplex system, and all lighting will be LED. Destination signs will be Twin Vision. The space above the engine compartment where the AC unit was typically mounted is now empty, allowing for the installation of a rear window. The rear destination sign will be mounted above the upper right corner of the window. The 35' buses will have 28 - 29 seats and the 40' buses will have 38 seats. Other features include a Safety Vision video surveillance system and Sportsworks bicycle racks.

The current schedule calls for deliveries to begin this November and continue through March 2011, but this may be subject to change. I’ll provide more information as it becomes available.

The Narrow Profile. Apparently these have worked out better for CT Transit than the Veloporter.

I seen new MCI D4500CTs floating around Hartford today. They look sharp. They have seamless windows, the new standard front and back, regular Sportworks bike racks (not Narrow Profiles or Veloporters), Twinvision signs, and stainless steel bottoms (is this even a possible option). I seen fleet #1010 or 1011 (couldn't remember) and 1014. There were a few more lurking downtown, but couldn't see the fleet #'s. Well they look awesome, not to sound redundant.

An update on the status of the procurement.

All of the D35LFR's for NBT and Dattco are now in service. Delivery is presently under way for the MCI D-4500 commuter coaches. There will be a total of 33 built. In addition to Hartford and Stamford, a large part of the order will be going to the private companies operating Hartford area commuter routes, the goal being that the CT Transit brand will appear on all buses operating the state subsidized runs.

The Xcelsiors should be arriving starting in October, with 14 XDE40's (hybrid) assigned to New Haven, and 17 XD35 (clean diesel) and 17 XDE35 (hybrid) assigned to Waterbury,

The first of the Nova articulated buses are scheduled to arrive in November. The will be 25 clean diesels and 6 hybrids in this group. No details as to how many will be assigned to each of the three largest divisions (Hartford, New Haven and Stamford).

I also understand that another fuel cell bus has been delivered to Hartford, but I do not have any more details at this time.

I wish I read this this morning, because I had to take a double take on the CT Transit bus that was operating on the 17-Vernon Express. One thing though, what will happen to these buses as for making private companies money? I can understand not branding them with the private company's logo, but they don't have lavatories and video systems. The 2002 MCIs that Collins/Post Road Stages have are both commuter ready (large dest. signs, commuter doors) and charter ready(lavs and video system). Why couldn't the state at least put lavs and video systems in, well at least at the private carriers expense?

The idea is to use these buses for commuter runs only. When a bus is used for both commuter and charter service, the state subsidizes only the costs related to the use of the vehicle while operating in commuter service. This requires detailed record keeping on the part of the operating company, and can be subject to abuse if the company is not accurate with the information provided to the state. By keeping the buses strictly for commuter service, it is easier to track the operating expenses, and ultimately saves the state money.

It also saves wear and tear on the buses.

I do question if so many transit agencies really need MCI commuter coaches for what are glorified suburban runs. Those coaches often see limited use and cannot be used on other services. Here in Syracuse, Centro replaced a fleet of 13 MCI’s with five new MCI D4000’s and eight Gillig two-door transit buses equipped with high-back suburban seats. The MCI’s are used for the true ‘intercity’ runs to Auburn and Oswego and the Gilligs handle the express runs around Syracuse, with the bonus that they can be used on off-peak suburban services as well.

I thought that CT Transit was getting away from this practice when the suburban style D40LF's were purchased in 2007. But from what I hear, passengers have been spoiled by riding in the coaches, and tend to complain when a transit type bus is substituted. I do wonder if these new commuter coaches would have been purchased if federal stimulus funding was not picking up most of the cost.

For the most part, no. But for the private contractors, yes. They tend to use their private coaches constantly on routes, especially DATTCO.
