On this day........
In 1948, the IND's formidable, long-lived "Artens" (aka "Thunderboids") entered service on the "A" line.
In 1972, twenty-four years later, the "foist" train of gleaming "R-44s" entered service on the "D".
Where have the decades gotten to...........

Nowadays, the 205th Street terminus looks about as dilapidated as the "Bee-Em-Tee's" Chambers Street station of the Nassau Street line. In that '72 photo that station looked far better kept.
As to Columbus Circle, I checked the scale drawings used during construction. The distance between track center and platform column on that station was 9' 5-1/2", vs. 9' 4" at most "Eye-En-Dee" stations (some, like Jay Street-Borough Hall, had a distance of 10' 2", as did the Eighth Avenue terminus of the 'Bee-Em-Tee's' 14th Street-Canarsie line). They used the old style 'S' steel beams and 'L' and 'plate' steel sections all over the place, before Carnegie Steel introduced their wide-flange beams. U.S. Steel (which owned Carnegie) is one of those "unsung heroes" in terms of the building of this system, as it was their sections that were used. That whole station looked far better "back then" than it does now, I can tell you. |

Back in 1965......and back in 1972......the "Em-Tee-Yay" was STILL operating REAL buses....it would still be many years before the "foist" of the invasion of "BINOS" arrived on the scene.
Again, HOW MUCH we all took for granted. 
Thank our lucky stars for PHOTOS, and, of course, MEMORIES!

The (M)11 was at 132d Street depot from June 20, 1965 to Sept. 11, 1972, when it was shifted to the then-new Hudson depot at Pier 57. That depot also got the (M)12 Spring-Delancey and (M)14 14th Street from the 12th Street depot (which thereafter closed), and the (M)13 8th Street, (M)15 (later M26, now M23) 23d Street, (M)16 34th Street and (M)21 Houston Street-Avenue C from 54th Street. Buses from 132d Street, 100th Street and Amsterdam depots were shifted to the new depot / garage, as well as all those already at 12th Street. (While buses 8459-8477 from 100th Street were converted for express bus service, on the M23X and, later, M41 routes; this was why only six T6H-5310A's [4500-4505] were accorded to MaBSTOA, thus making it an even 25 buses for express runs.) |

.....been reading about the rapid influx of "Are-2-Elevens" on the "B" line, and, just what might replace them on the "Frankie", at some future date.
IMHO, I'm going to wager that, near the end, the few remaining "Brighton Belles" will be relegated to the "Frankie"......that is, until eben there they become redundant.
Indeed, nothing is forever...........

....when the "Brighton Belles" are finally put out to pasture, not only will they close out the era of roller curtains, but, also, the style of seating introduced by the ol' reliable "Fordy-Fours", over 50 years ago.........

Although the "Fordy-Fours' " seating was technically a revival of that used on all car classes from the "Arnines" up to the R-16's. |

For the life of me, I cannot understand why, with the NTTs assigned to the BMT/IND, why that old style of seating was not incorporated into the new units.
Though, recall, from the "R-27s"/"R-30s" through to the "R-42s", the "back-to-the-wall" seating was utilized.
I am sure, that "Es-Eye-Are" commuters are now indeed missing the more comfortable seating of the now-retired "Fordy-Fours"......
