S-60 To Smith Haven Mall,

Correction; Hornell Motor Coach #19 would have to have been a 1945 'GM' Coach TG 3609 - the name Yellow was dropped in 1943.

Hornell Motor Coach Co.

1945 Yellow Coach GM TG3609: #19[/quote]

Regards,

Mr. 'L'

Ah, that fact wasn't mentioned where ever it was that I saw that. I listed Yellow because that was what was listed at the top of the list I saw. I'll make the correction.

Taken - date unknown but not prior to 1973 - at Carl Place, Long Island, we see fleet number 602 - a 1962 GM Coach model TDH 5302 operating for the Metropolitan Suburban Bus Authority (MSBA) as contractor for Nassau County, New York.

# 602, originally purchased by Schenck Transportation of Floral Park, New York, was transferred to MSBA upon its takeover of Nassau's private operations in 1973.

While # 602 is a late phase one 'New Look' from GM as evidenced by its ornate Art Deco marker lights, it has already seen a factory upgrade from pantographic to standard sweep windshield wipers but has yet to have undergone anti shimmy roof modifications.

Of note are a factory air conditioner (rare for 1962 in the northeast) and standee glass configuration for a side destination sign (rare on most New Look buses).

# 602 is signed for the N-4 line from Jamaica to Freeport which was a long time Bee Line route before 1973.

I'm wondering if the double Metro 'M' decals under the windshield have any significance?

Photo courtesy of 'wnidsor74' and is up for bid on eBay as item # 380533885815.

Mr. L,
To answer your question on the double MTA decals, that was for the commemoration of the Bicentennial which would place the date of the photo somewhere around 1975-76. If you look closely, you could just make out the red, white, blue stripes on the decal to the right.
Regards,
Rich.

Speaking of Mack demonstrators (as I've just mentioned in 'Vintage New York City'), seen below (location unknown) is fleet # 402 - a 1960 Mack Model C-49-DT operating under lease demonstration for Hempstead Bus Corporation of Mineola, New York.

While # 402, which was among the last Mack buses to have ever been built, is shown with transit configuration seating and rear door, it features Mack's version of suburban passenger windows and their 'New Look' front clip developed by Niagara Frontier Transit.

Of unusual interest is what appears to be an air ventilator just aft of the lower portion of the front door which could be part of a New York State required full time mechanical ventilation system.

It is unlikely that # 402 was kept by Hempstead beyond the expiration of its lease and, therefore, would not be listed on their all time roster.

Photo courtesy of 'Vintage-Vault75' and is up for bid on eBay as Item # 170959354057.

Speaking of Mack demonstrators (as I've just mentioned in 'Vintage New York City'), seen below (location unknown) is fleet # 402 - a 1960 Mack Model C-49-DT operating under lease demonstration for Hempstead Bus Corporation of Mineola, New York.

Photo courtesy of 'Vintage-Vault75' and is up for bid on eBay as Item # 170959354057.

And to think that I actually rode #402 from Mineola to Freeport via Hempstead back when I was 13! I vividly remember the wheezing sound of the suspension - especially over the front wheels where I usually sit so I can look out the front!

BTW, note that the fare back then was 25 cents as evident by the fare printed on the side of the farebox.

S-60 To Smith Haven Mall,; take note;

Pictured in 1953 at the Long Island Railroad Station in Long Beach, New York is fleet # 118 - an early fifties Dodge Model B-3 chassis carrying a body of unknown origin and operating for the City of Long Beach.

# 118 is signed for 'East End' which will take it along East Park Avenue to the Lido Beach line (a special summer permit granted by Nassau County allowed the east end route access to the adjacent Lido Beach Hotel during morning and evening rush hours).

Standing next to # 118 is a Dodge chassis of the same era but with an older body and signed for 'West End' which will take it along West Park Avenue to New York Avenue and then West Beech Street to the Atlantic Beach line.

The Ford Transit in the background, operated by the Rockville Centre Bus Corporation, is bound for Hempstead.

Bus service in Long Beach can be traced as far back as the mid twenties and was operated by the privately owned Long Beach Bus Company until the late forties when it was taken over by the city.

On a personal note; when my parents rented summer houses at the east end of the city when I was a kid, I rode the Dodge buses many times to and from midtown.

Photo courtesy of 'Vintage-Vault75' and is up for bid on eBay as item # 181045336400.

Ok. I see that MSBA got Flxibles from NYCTA (#9000 series). Does ANYBODY have a picture of those buses? Mr. Linsky, if you would be SO kind to share IF you have them. Thanks in advance!

TransitMan,
How I wish I had photos of the NYCTA 9000's at MSBA. The one's posted in the vintage roster were those that I had seen, there may have been others. I had seen 9032 and 9052 on the N79. What a photo shot of any of those sitting at the Walt Whitman terminal would have been. IIRC, the 9000's remained in TA colors. I don't recall any with an orange stripe. They were only on loan for a short time.

B53RICH,

Thanks for the compliment on Vintage New York City reaching 100 pages and over a quarter of a million hits - I never ever thought it would catch on as it has!

Anyway, I would have loved to have seen a TA 9000 running in Nassau County - that would have made some picture - I get goose bumps when I think about it! (I'd call it a rough and tough city boy visiting the burbs on vacation!).

BTW; do you ever hear from OKG Joe?

Many regards,

Mr. 'L'
