Further early jitney/streetcar competition:
So serious was the early jitney "invasion", it was reported that LARy (Los Angeles Railways) was losing an estimated $600 a day in revenue to the jitneys.
By 1915, LARy was losing close to a half million dollars annually (HUGE losses for that time, especially!)
So serious was the loss of revenue, that, for a time, LARy put a number of extensions on hold, as well as holding back on new car orders.
In San Diego, the jitney competition was so severe on certain lines that the streetcar company simply stopped operating its cars on those routes!
Jitneys were also a problem in Washington DC, as well as Toronto, during those years; by 1920, there was an estimated 3000 jitneys operating on US streets.
In Honolulu, jitney operation, interestingly enough, did not fall under regulatory control until 1940.......

On a warm, sultry day, why not hop aboard an open-air "Chiva" bus and "catch the breeze"!
Be sure to check out the flamboyant, colorful, and truly eye-catching "Chiva" that operates right here in New York (this one is a school bus-type vehicle); some interesting information accompanies the photo.
Talk about a PARTY bus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

More "in depth" details on New York's "Chiva'" ("The Columbian Party Bus")
From what I've read, it indeed seems as though they are prepared for EVERY party contingency!
(Maybe the MTA could learn a few new ways on how to "liven up" their bus service; imagine something like this on the M42?)

Another interesting (and certainly colorful!) South-Of-The-Border bus.....the "Chicken Bus"........

*In Panama, these vehicles are called "pirate buses". |

This morning, after I purchased my paper, I again decided to "estimate" the ratio of jitney vans to NJT buses, on Anderson Avenue.
In a 25-minute span, I counted 30 vans and one NJT bus (this lone bus was an inbound #159)
Score:
JITNEYS: 30
BUSES: 1
Earlier this evening, after a quick run to the store, I again decided to "keep store"; of course, after 9PM, whatever NJT bus service there is , is infrequent at best.
This time, I "kept score" for roughly 20 minutes; this time around, the jitneys were in even greater profusion than this morning.
I logged a whopping forty-two vans during this time period; I only observed two NJT buses; one was an inbound #159, and another was deadheading to the Fairview garage.
SCORE:
JITNEYS: 42
BUSES: 2
Several times, there were three and four vans in a bunch, in both directions on Anderson Avenue; I also saw several that were pulling in and out of the parking lot behind the food market/laundromat.
IMHO, and I will be totally honest here, is that I would not be the least bit surprised if NJT eventually eliminated ALL bus service in my area, excepting weekday rush hours.
As it is, the jitneys far, far outnumber the NJT buses, and NJT seems pretty complacent with the current situation.
Frankly, I do not see any sort of improvement on the horizon, not even the faintest glimmer.....I sure hope I'm wrong on this.....

The easy simple fix to this situation, would be for NJT to partner with NYCTA, and offer free Metrocard transfers. Not sure how that could work, with the fare differences, or if the MTA would see any benefit for themself in doing it, but it would probably put a whole lot of those jitney's out of business overnite....in fact, NJT would have to scramble to accommodate hordes of new rider's.... |

I LIKE the way you think!
I never thought of this type of scenario before, and, I will tell you this, it DOES make a good deal of sense.
If even HALF of the jitney operators could be taken off the roads, that would be a MAJOR plus.
Not only would our streets be safer, but NJT would be gaining that many more riders.
Over the span of many years, during off peaks, I have seen a quite a few idle buses at the Fairview garage (ex-ORANGE & BLACK) that could be put to better use on the streets, picking up fares.
I cannot believe it is now going on two decades since the vans really started to invade the area; sure SOMETHING can be done....it has REALLY gotten out of hand as of late......

TODAY'S "SCORES":
JITNEYS: 36
BUSES: 2
(First bus was OOS, deadheading to Fort Lee, while the second one was a #159, heading to Fort Lee)
This was in a 15 minute time span; it is quite easy to see which vehicles were far more numerous (!!)
And so it goes..........

In my own fantasy land, I would have some New York subway lines running up and down Bergen, Jersey City, and Bayonne to Midtown.
Alot of the equipment doesn't exactly look complaint, but as time passes the operators seems to be buying better buses.
I have a whole group of photos on Flickr dedicated to them:

The lines at the jitney stop over by 42nd Street and 8th Avenue. No joke!!!
