Jim Mancuso, a.k.a. Dieseljim, passed away earlier this week following a brief illness. He was controversial at times but provided invaluable information about upstate bus operations of the past.

Obituary from the Batavia Daily News. Funeral is today in his hometown of Perry, NY.

Wow - that is sad news. I know I butted heads with Jim at times, but I never saw him as being a troublemaker - he was just passionate in his beliefs.

Terribly sad news! Note, in the news link, states a fuller obituary to appear in its issues dated today, FR 16 OCT...

Indeed, Jim could be provocative now and then, but I always looked forward to seeing new messages up from him.
The man had a broad scope of interests, and wrote insightfully on a number of topics...

It looks like the obits are a day behind in the online edition. I'll update the link when the full version is available.

I feel as though we've lost another partner!

I don't think I can find words better said than those of Vern!

D. J. (that's what I always called him) was one of a kind and will be sorely missed here at BusTalk.

In honoring our departed friend, I would hope that his name remains prominently on our membership list.

Rest in peace D. J.

Mr. 'L'

The link to the obit has been updated; here's the text:

James H. Mancuso

PERRY -- James H. Mancuso, 55, died at home after a brief illness sometime during Oct. 10-13, 2009.

He was born Dec. 19, 1953, in Rochester and grew up at Silver Lake. He lived in his Main Street apartment for the past 25 years. He made Perry his home and cared greatly for the community, writing frequent letters to the editor to The Daily News and other publications on ways to improve life for Perry residents.

James (Jim) was a member of the Perry Main Street Association and its Silver Lake Trail Committee. He was a social member of the Perry Volunteer Fire Department. He helped with their fundraisers and advocated their need for new and better equipment. He was a lifelong rail fan and friend of local engineers. Jim compiled and self published several booklets on the history of the railroads that he loved. He also enjoyed bowling and big band music.

He is survived by his father, Anthony (Debbie) Mancuso of Mount Morris; his mother, Betty Loew of Northfield, Ohio; his brother, David (Kathy) Mancuso of Silver Springs, a sister, Christine (Mancuso) Myers of Silver Lake; aunts Frances Matthews of Silver Lake, Margaret Shepard of Castile, Uncle Thomas (Patti) Matthews of Wapakoneta, Ohio, and several half sisters, half brothers, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 7:30 tonight at Perry First United Methodist Church in Perry. A memorial service will follow at 7:30. Personal messages may be left at eatonwatsonfuneralhome.com. Memorials may be made to the Perry Volunteer Fire Department.

Indeed, Jim was a 'piece of work,' as some of us who frequent this and other bus and railroad forums knew well.

So sorry to hear of his passing. May his soul rest in peace!

Allow me to join the chorus of condolences.
He was only 55 so much too young to leave us.
