W.J.,

Great bunch of photos that bring back so many memories.

The 'Silvercup' sign that shows in the background of the first #7 photo is, of course, the old Silvercup Bread Company bakery building which was turned into a movie studio some years ago.

If you ask me what the best aroma was that was emitted from the city, I would say that it was that of Silvercup bread baking and was most prominent as you crossed the upper roadway of the 59th. Street Bridge (that's the Queensboro for you out of towners).

Anyway, enjoy the couple of nostalgic photos below the center of which may have been taken when the building was still a bakery.

BTW: anybody remember the Sunshine Biscuit Company's 'thousand window' factory at the corner of Queens Boulevard and the bottom of the upper roadway ramp to the bridge? - that's where we used to stop for 'broken crackers' at their special outlet shop (see lower photo).

Good memories!

Photos thanks to 'Forgotten New York'

To both of you - Thank you for the pictures........Several comments ....

1 - The picture of the # 7 train departing the upper level of Queensboro Plaza to Flushing is interesting because of the crane in the background. According to Kevin Walsh's site www.forgotten-nyc.com that was the site of the ugliest building in Queens, the Parking Garage built around the 1960's and was to be torn down. Also if you look south before the train goes past 33rd/Rawson Street, you will see a large white builiding. That was for many years, the National Biscuit Company, then the building was home to the International Design Center of NY, now part of La Guardia Community College, A block to the east is a sand colored building with a tower. Once home to Chiclets, Adams and other gums.

2 - WCA - I fondly remember the smell you were talking about. It was always a treat to go over the bridge (even on the lower level) on FACC's #15 route or the Q-60
Very Happy

Also according to a search, Slivercup studios opened in 1983, so that the b/w photo is probably prior to that, since the sign only says "Silvercup" and doesn't have the word "studio" on it. I remember how their red and cream colored delivery truck would give out tiny unsliced loaves of bread wrapped in wax paper. Too back mom never saved the waxed paper with the logo all over it.

I wonder how challenging it would be to collect photos the same-fleet-number buses in various systems. such as finding 3803 somewhere else than NYCTA.

It's faint, but "STUDIOS" is on the sign in the B&W photo.

I would agree;

The black and white photo may have been taken just as the plant was converted to a studio.

The parking area in the foreground used to be filled with Silvercup Boyerton step vans loading baked goods for retail delivery.
