About 8 a.m. today, June 15, 2009, I was walking along Merrick Road, Seaford, Long Island. Within three or four minutes, six of the newest Academy buses whizzed by, four from Jones Beach to the U.S. Open practice at Bethpage, two heading to the beach for customers. Because of inadequate parking at Bethpage State Park, ticket holders are being told to park at Jones Beach (free parking), where they are screened and put on charter buses. The trip to Bethpage is via northbound Wantagh State Parkway, eastbound Merrick Road, and northbound NY 135 expressway. This is the same plan that was followed in 2002? when the golf Open was previously held at Bethpage. At that time, even Rutgers buses were pressed into service.

The fleet includes Rutgers 2120 and 2124. Right now there is a thunderstorm as the two flows of buses pass on Merrick Road to/from the Open.

Yesterday I saw two Academy and one Rutgers (articulated ?) northbound on the 135 (Seaford Oyster Bay Expy). They were headed to the Open.

The NYS DOT has constructed a temporary exit for buses only. It is on the n/b side, north of Hempstead Turnpike and south of the Powell Avenue exit and the LIRR trestle. There are orange construction barrels lined up for about 1/2 mile on the shoulder and a portable electronic sign saying US OPEN EXIT - BUSES ONLY. The vehicles slow down and make a hard right turn onto a patch of asphalt. There is a break in a chain link fence with yield signs on both sides. There is a road just beyond the fence, but I could see if there were any directional signs.

Don't know the route for the buses to re-enter the SOB.

Also I guess that they take the Wantagh Parkway north, out of Jones Beach. Then exit at Merrick Road east through Seaford to the 135 north.

A mix of Academy branded MCIs and Rutgers-branded NOVAs and New Flyers from the Perth Amboy and Hoboken pools are working the shuttles and private group transport jobs at the Open - in addition to MTA LIBUS shuttles of LIRR passengers from Farmingdale and other charter outfits that have been subcontracted.

Two observations from heading N/B on the SOB yeasterday about 5 PM while on the way home from the wedding of MR.RT's youngest daughter.

Saw two coaches from D&F travel heading s/b. Not sure if they were doing shuttle work.

Also saw an Academy coach w/b on the Powell Avenue overpass preparing to go south on the 135. That answers my previous question of where the shuttles re-enter the SOB.

All we get out here in L.A. are reports of bad rains, and 'Tiger' bringing up the rear!

Will be in town later in the week - hope the weather improves.

In the meantime, how about funneling some of that water this way - we sure need it!

Today is cloudy with a chance of scattered showers but officials think the final round will be completed.

It is supposed to clear up later in the week. This AM's forecast for Saturday is sunny with a low of 62 and a high of 80.

Hopefully we'll get together on Saturday.
