I'll tell you what would pin back the ears of these 'gas hogs' (and I say hogs because they're actually taking supply from the rest of us and creating an unwarrented demand!).

Just as the State of New York charges their registration fees by the weight of the vehicle, so should gas stations charge not only by weight but by the size of the engine.

I think the guy that rolls in for gas with a 7000 lb. Hummer should be surcharged for the excess fuel that he is wasting at our expense!

That would be a 'fair and balanced' solution to the problem, and you'd see how fast the 'monsters' would disappear from the road!

With the troubled state of the auto industry, I would have to say that the Big Three or is it Detroit Three brought on much of it themselves with the SUV's and less fuel efficient cars and trucks than found at Nissan,Mazda, Toyota, et. al. Add to that Government mandates on pollution control equipment, and last but not least, the price gouging antics of the oil companies as a result of market manipulations by a bunch of commodities speculators who did great harm to the economy as a whole. The UAW had a hand in making the troubles for the industry they work in with their seemingly incessant demants for eveything but the sky, which is no wonder so many US cars seem to be overpriced. Hopefully the whole mess will be cleaned up and I don't think that the cesspool on Wall Street would be a bad place to start. Rampant market manipulations in commodities, insider trading, and other such nonsense helped contribute to the automakers' troubles in addition to much of which they brought on themselves. So there is PLENTY OF BLAME TO GO AROUND and much of it starts in Detroit and reverberates to New York and the Wall Street cesspool.

Dieseljim -

Consider, too, there has been way too much sound bite hysteria, and complete lack of any much reason concerning:

SUVs. Ah, the Demon here on Earth as perceived by the greenie fascists! Those folks want us all in nasty little "City Cars", or even
better, we should all walk about in designer Birkenstocks! The little vehicles are de facto, "Unsafe At Any Speed" revisited. Certainly
not suited for all purpose use in Montana, West Texas, or even Bradford, PA...

SUVs serve a distinct market need for myriad buyers. Yes, some come out of the dealer showroom, with every possible option in the
catalog. Some have been the problem taking all the heat, as there are buyers simply making "fun" purchases. Little thought if an
SUV is what is needed for their actual purposes. For most, buying the wrong vehicle, each for their own needs, is a serious mistake...

UAW an issue? This is just so much big labor hate being manifested. Rather, the problem here has always been with Congress. It has
the charge of delivering a sound money. We haven't had that since 1913; the dollar of then is now worth two and a half cents. UAW
has simply tried to see its members "made whole" compared with ravages of inflation. Its economic advisers are better than on TV
screen, mindless, shrieking and breathless blond bimbos!...

High vehicle prices. For whom? See UAW item, above. Do comparative inflation adjusted values and check the results. Near all of the
anomalies of price spikes are result of government mandated crap and fad add ons. Everything near always costs the same over time,
using constant dollar adjusted pricing
...

Speaking of sound bite hysteria, I don't think the "greenie fascist" expect Montanans to drive Smart Cars. The problem is people who buy them strictly as single-occupancy commuter vehicles.

Every time oil prices go up, everything else follows. So these oil companies are to be blamed.
