With all the highway coach crashes involving the ejection of passengers from the coach, particularly in rollovers, it seems to me that seatbelts and shoulder harnesses would prevent a lot of these injuries and fatalities if installed and used in highway coaches. The only time a passenger should be moving around in the bus is when he or she is going to or from the restroom in the rear. At all other times, everybody, driver included, should be belted in for the trip. In addition, the resulting damage from a rollover shows some glaring weaknesses in the crashworthiness of some of these coaches, particularly the ones relying heavily on plastics for much of their construction. There is simply no good excuse for the carnage that these bus crashes produce. It is possible that it is corporate greed that has gone too damn far. So far to the point of playing Russian Roulette with people's lives and it has got to stop. I hope the buses Greyhound is buying are well built as most Prevosts are. The standards of construction of these vehicles need improvement. But let's not over do it on the regulation aspect of it. The manufacturers should be GUIDED and NOT forced into crash worthiness improvements. Perhaps MCI should bring back the MC7, MC8 and MC9s and get rid of the plastic buses now being offered. |

D. J.,
I'm in complete agreement with you on the seat belts - it should have been mandatory years ago!
And, as far as plastic bodies go, just look below at what happens in a simple engine fire - 'poof' - no more bus!
I wonder how the insurance underwriters are taking it?
