Hard to believe........

In just a few more days, it will be 70 years since the last (PCC) streetcars clanged and clattered along the streets of Brooklyn.
,
Today, in 2026 Brooklyn has been without electric streetcars longer than it operated them.

And it's nows nearly 70 years since the last Brooklyn trolleybuses hummed along.........

......B&QT PCC #1039 was the very last streetcar to operate on Church Avenue.

Bu this late date, only two streetcar lines remained out of the once-vast network that once crisscrossed the borough,

The only actie car house then was the 9th Avenue depot............

That it was a dark and rainy night was rather apropos given the night the last streetcars ran in Brooklyn. Ebbets Field only lasted one more year.

W.B.:

That gloomy weather indeed "set the stage", if you will.

The downfall of "clsssic Brooklyn",IMHO, began in 1956, when the last streetca rsrn,

Then,,,,,,,,,,,,,

1957:

The Dodger moev to "El-Ay"

1958:

The last open platfom BMT "BU" El cars are retired.

1960:

Yje last trolleybuses are replaced by Fishbowls.

1964:

The 69th Street Ferry shuts down.

Circa-1965:

Steeplechase Park at Coney Island closess.

1969:

A "double whammy" year: the last "Broadway Battleships"(Standards) are retired; the "Moit" closes, spelling doom for the wooden "Q" cars..................

The streetcars were retired and replaced within the same time period the "Tee-Yay" were getting their then brand-spanking new 6000-series "Pattons." None of which, it appears, would have seen "soivice" in Manhattan. Thus those would have replaced them.

Going by the autos, this Brooklyn street scene appears to date to the early 196-s........................

......still thinking on that photo in "NEW YOK CITY TRANSIT MEMORIES", showing new "Jetson" Fishbowls about to replace the old B&QT trolleybuses in 1960; that Brooklyn was then basically a "blue collar" area, one MIGHT think that the electricc coaches would be replaced by the more "appropriate"Old Looks and MACKS.

In 1960, flashy new "Jetsons" would have been more "at home" on a "tony" Manhattan route, than running in working-class Brooklyn.

Obviously, this was a "replace the old with the shiny and new" publicity event for the "Tee-Yay"............

The funny thing was, "Jetsons" in the 500's, in 1960, were also deposited into Manhattan; a 1961 photo had one of them with markings of the (M)15 bus to 126th Street. There were more of that order (500-805) than the prior one (1-190, 1959), so the "Tee-Yay" had more to spare for "tony" Manhattan - plus, the fact that viz the "Jetsons" in Manhattan FACL had beat them to the punch.

W.B.

Appreciate the info.

IMHO, regarding non-Old Look-type buses, ""Dangerfields: would have seen more appropriate for Brooklyn, at least at the onset, having more of a stolid "working class" look than a flashy Fishbowl............
