If "Mr. Jan-OH!"is so pro-CBTC, an such a foe of block signals, I can just imagine his reaction toTHIS type of signalling......

On this day in 1954..........
Through BMT Culver service is abandoned; the ramp connecting the IND at to the Culver line is completed; for the first time, IND trains ("D") from "da Bronx" will now operate over the former BMT Culver rails to Coney Island....

Of the various BMT "Southern Division" routes, the only one the D did not travel on was the Sea Beach. They did everything else (Culver, Brighton and now West End).
I once was on an R train that, from 95th Street and 4th Avenue, traveled to Continental Avenue via the 6th Avenue line. |

W.B.:
When I think back to my long-ago childhood days, I always recall "Broadway Battleships" (Standards) dominating the "See Beech", and also recall the "Triplex" units on the Astoria line.
Last time Your's Truly rode on the Culver (outbound from Coney Island) was c-1982/1983, aboard a battle-scarred "Slant 40"........................had thar elongated RFW all to myself, all the way back to Manhattan., that sultry summer Saturday......

That first photo (#5265) was from near the tail end of the "mix and match" era for the "B" Division (a married pair of R-38's was just behind the "Slant 40" in that consist). Mixing such "units" (to use Brian J. Cudahy's terminology) was far more jarring there than on the IRT where it would be de rigueur through the early '80's. |

W.B,:
As the 70s progressed, ALL subway divisions were indeed "patchwork quilts"; mismatched equipment, a ragtag display of roller curtains, not to mention graffitii and rust, had indeedt aken thei toll.
By the early 1980S, the battle had clearly been LOST.
The "B" Diision cars also were not spared, especially the battle-weary "R-16's;" ditto the "R-27s"/"R-30s"......it was a dark time, indeed,,,,,thankfully the bus fleet was spared the worst of the blight...............

At least, unlike "da Moit," these ol' reliables lasted long enough to see the Mets win the World Series . . . |
