Cool looking buses. I think PE had some that served on the Newport Beach line. If I remember correctly, the president of PE lived down there and wanted a nice bus to get him there swiftly from downtown LA.

Recal lthe original YELLOW GM "PD""/PG" type coaches; the rounded rear ends of these bug buses were clearly inspired by that used on the FLXIBLE "Clipper".

However, there WERE differences;in particularly the rear ends of the "PG"/"PD"-types, which featured illuminated drumheads, which the "Clippers" did not have.

PSNJ rostered a number of these tough=looking buses,backin the day.......

Buses looked better when they were "tough looking!" The sissy-looking buses of today with the slanted-eye headlights suck!

I always thought the Whites rated high on the tough-looking list.

MUNI was still operating both MACKS ans WHITES for some years after they vanished from my general area (the last disappeared no later than late 1967/1968)

MACKS swaggered and lumbered through traffic with the same self-assured, cocky attitude as a veteran prizefighter....... Wink

Yje NYCTA's MACKS were retired prior to 1970.........

MUNI did, indeed, run their Macks and Whites longer than most transit companies. I think their Twin trolleybuses ran into the mid-70's.

Another criteria for "tough-looking buses" were those that weren't much more than rolling wrecks. To me, photos of some of Ave. B & E. Broadway's rolling stock met this criteria. Surface, too!

MUNI, like the CTA, obviously liked postwar TWINS; recall, though, nearly 1,000 of the postwar TWINS (CTA) were propane powered.

Though CMCCo ostered mostly Old Looks, they did also have some MACKS on the roster.

The CSL had a truly diverse bus fleel' YELLOW, GM, WHITE, MACK, TWIN, and ACF-BRILL.

Many of these rugged, "no longer spring chicken" buses ran well into the 1960s, with the CTA......

WHITES, like MACKS, were indeed aggressive-looking, no nonsense buses, ready to take on anything short of a Sherman tank.....

When I was a kid, both NHBL and INTER-CITY (both of which passed by our old apartment building) rostered WHITES, both the older 798s and the newer 1150s.

NHBL's were transits, while INTER-CITY's were suburbans.

All werer etired by the late 1960s; I can STILL hear their aggressive 'battle cries" today.....,,
