I was VERY lucky, indeed! Very Happy

Though, of course, I certainly remember RDCs at Jersey City, Mom and I never rose them out of that terminal; the ones we rode were on the Broad Street Newark-Elizabethport shuttle, which ended with Aldene in 1967.

Those cars were TOTALLY cool!!!! Wink

Cyberider:

Inside the car, the noise was there, but nothing that was overly loud, and really quite pleasant; the engines made a distinctive sound that, sometimes, reminded me a bit of a GM bus! Shocked .

If you watched them roll by, they seemed to have a gentle sway; like ALCO diesels, some referred to the RDCs as "honorary steam locomotives", as, when revved up, they could SMOKE! Shocked

Their horns were also most distinctive; they sounded more like the squawking of a lovelorn goose than a diesel.....but this only added to their overall charm! Very Happy

These classic and iconic rail cars will forever live in my memories........

........after the CNJ ended passenger service on the Atlantic Highlands branch in late 1966, the several RDCs assigned to that line migrated north, and were assigned to the Elizabethport-Newark shuttle, as well as rush hour through service on the Main Line out of Jersey City.

Unlike the RDG, the CNJ never rostered any RDC-2s.............

Cyberider....

Indeed, there WAS an aura of romance to the rails, back in my day.

Today, everything is all hi-tech, lookalike, and as humdrum as a lamppost........mothing at all like it was, 60-0dd years ago............... Sad

The CNJ's Jersey City Terminal (the countdown to Aldene)......

The ailing CNJ's cavernous Jersey City Terminal was a massive operation, with an impressive, extensive workforce.

Operating staff consisted of:

Assistant Ferrymaster
---------------------------------------------------f
The ferry terminal also required:

Bridgemen

Gatemen
---------------------------------------------------

Each of the several ferryboats required:

Captains

Deckhands

Full engine room crew
----------------------------------------------------

The main terminal required:

Trainmaster

Assistant Traunmaster

Statioimaster

Assistant Stationmaster

Train announcer

Gatemen

Electricians
----------------------------------------------------------

Towers "A" and B" each required several operators

The coach repair shop srequired a full staff of mechanics, electricians, and painters, and cleaners

The Jersey City terminal (Countdown to Aldene, Part 2)...........

The last few weeks of Jersey City passenger operations saw the cleaning out of the vast coach uards, with all passenger equipment removed (after Aldene, with so many service cuts, at least 60/70% of the extensive coach fleet was either scrapped or sold off ; all combines were retired on the day after Aldene)

Workmen were removing the many dozens of TDI (Terminal Displays Incorporated) advertising posters from the walls of the station building and ts echoing concourses.

The terminal's concessions (newsstands, snack bars, etc) were closing up, with thier employees now out of work.

Only two of the three remaining active ferryboats were still running on the last day of ferry operations.

With the ferryboats gone, and the tug fleet reduced to but two boats, the CNJ's once-bustling Marine Yard (near the Statue of Liberty) was barely functioning, and would close entirely by 1973.

With passenger power now ousted from the Communipaw Engine Terminal, one roundhouse was closed, and much of the the workforce either re-assigned or furloughed.

This was alsp the very last waterfront passenger terminal to operate in Jersey City.

Ant the hours dwindled down to a precious few, closing down Jersey City passenger operations forever............

Cyberider:

Indeed; quite a number of Hudson County residents were out of a job when the Aldene Plan took affect.

The CNJ's piggyback terminal (just to the south of Tower "A") was relocated to Newark.

The CNJ closed down all freight operations in Jersey City in 1973.

CNJ's trans-Hudson (carfloat/lighterage) service was transferred to the LV, which ended its marine operations in 1976, when it was absorbed by ConRail.

By that time, the LV's once-proud tug fleet was down to only one boat.

The CNJ terminals train concourse became a parking lot for employee's autos until 1973.

Abandoned combines and coaches sat forlornly under the once-busy trainsheds; they were later cut up on site......Sad

B&O track assignments at Jersey City.....

When B&O bus connection service began in the late 1920s, tracks #s 2 and 3 were removed, and the area made into a driveway for the buses.

After B&O service to Jersey City ended in 1958, the tracks formerly used by the B&O were used by CNJ commuter trains.

The former bus driveway became a parking area.
'
The remains of the old bus turntable were stillin place after the terminal closed in 1967............

Three generations...........

Three generations of motor coaches operated in Jersey City-New York bus connection service for the B&O.

All were equipped with sedan doors; the last buses used in this unique operation were postwar WHITES..........
