(SEE PREVIOUS POSTS/LINKS)

This timeless photo from pre-Aldene 1966 shows a brawny CNJ "Trainmaster"(still in original paint) leading a NY&LB train out of Jersey City at South Amboy.

Note the combine; all of these cars were retired with the Aldene Plan.................

The CNJ's "GP-40s".......

These powerful engines were the last new passenger power purchased by the CNJ (1969)

Thee hoods were longer than the standard "40", as they were equipped with boilers for train heating, and generators for coach lighting.

13 "40s"replaced a like number of "Trainmasters".

It is interesting to note that, as the "Trainmasters" replaced the double-ended "Baby Face" Baldwins in 1957,The "40s"were actually THIRD generation power, as the "Trainmasters" themselves were FIRST generation engines, BUT, had replaced the earlier Baldwins.......

Second-hand coaches.......

In the late 1960s, a group of ex-SANTA FE coaches were purchased by the E-L/NJDOT, for service on the diesel lines out of Hobokem replacing elderly ERIE and DL&W cars that were slated to be white-lined.

These coaches ran until 1971, the the new "Comet" push-pulls arrived.

They then migrated over to the NY&LB (North Jersey Coast Line), where they operated with other second-hand, revamped through coaches; these coaches came from several different roads, and lasted into the NJT era.

One car was an ex-FEC observation, which was converted for use as a commuter's subscription car.........

You are quite welcome! Wink

The "progression" pf diesel power on the E-L through the 1960s was also quite interesting.

Through the mid-1950s, the E-L rosstered both "E-8s"(DL&W/ERUE) and ALCO"PAs" (ex-ERIE)

THese engines powered most of the through trains out of Hoboken; by the mid-60s, the "PAs" were relegated to commuter service, before they were later "sent west" for freight service.

After the massive train cuts in late 1966, most of the "E-8s" then found themselves mostly relegated to commuter runs, with the exception of those that still hauled the few remaining through trains, all of which were gone by 1970

After 1971 (with the exception of the small group that handled Port Jrtvis commuter trains until 1974), all of the once-proud "E-8s" were either re-geared forf freight service, sold, or scrapped.

Until the new push-pulls arrived in 1971, Geeps, "RS-3s", and E-8's"were used in commuter service.

I well remember some ex-ERIE "PAs" and "E-8s" still wearing full ERIE paint as late as 1964/1965.....the bold nose wings were particularly stylish! Very Happy

Here's a particularly proud-looking ERIE "E-8" at Hoboken, taken in 1957, when the ERIE was beginning to shift some trains up to Hoboken

This timeless scene EASILY could have been taken in the early 1960s; this is EXACTLY what I remember, asa young lad! Very Happy

Interestingly, the "LAKE CITIES" (to Dearborn Street, Chicago), was the very last E-L through train, making its final run in 1970.

Related trivia..........

Until about 1965, it was commonplace to see E-L's "E-8s" and "PAs" MU'd, back to back, on certain through trains.

It was standard E-L practice to position the "PAs"at the head of the train, with the "E-8" trailing.

The reason for this was that the "PA's" had a tendency to "kick"when theu accelerated away from a stop, causing the consist to jolt................

DL&W's "Trainnasters"............

These magnificent-looking (and POWERFUL!) were indeed CLASSICS (LIONEL even offered a version in "O" gauge!)

The engines were primarily used on the longer-haul suburban/through trains; on weekends, however ,it was not uncommon at all to see these monsters in freight service.

Oddly, the E-L did not use the "Trainmasters" long in passenger service; they were soon relegated freight service.

I DO remember clearly seeing a few of these engines, repainted in E-L's freight colors, sitting together in the Hoboken passenger yards about 1965.

Like the "PAs", the "FMs" were all gone by 1970; their last duties included working the ore docks in the Cleveland area.....

Here's a truly beautiful portrait ofa CNJ "Trainmaster" still attired in its original paint, at Jersey City, in 1964.

Note the coach repair buildings/shp[s in the background; also thes emaphores.

Such scenes I knew so well asa boy, growing up in the pre-Aldene 1960s.

Sadly, nothing seen here (just outside of the trainsheds) survives today (view looks northwest; the passenger terminal would be out of the picture on the right)..............

The demise of CNJ's mighty "Trainmasters".............

These brwny, powerful vehemooths were only 12 years old when they were prematuely retired in 1969, still QUITE young for ANY locomotive.

The new Road Manager of the CNJ wanted to dispose to the "FNs", as he wanted a "standardized"engine roster

The 13 engines, as you know, were replaced by a like number of new "DP-40Ps".

All were scrapped, their power plants sold for marine use.

The "Baby"Trainmasters were bumped into freight service after Aldene; all were off the roster by 1970.............
