This venerable NYC hotel was named the filthiest hotel for the 3rd time in the last 4years by some .com travel webstie.
As Larry Gault pointed out over three years ago on another site, this place was the Hotel Dixie and a a stop for Greyhound in the 40's and 50's. The buses would enter 44th Street from 8th Avenue and go down the west ramp onto a turntable so they could back into a stall. When ready they drove back onto the turntable and were positioned to leave from the east entrance.
When I went past the hotel in Sept 2005 the turntable was still there. It looked like a giant manhole cover. Don't know if it works or not. |

Hart Bus -
Can we be quite sure the reference to Greyhound isn't more urban legend than anything else? Recall, GL used 34th Street (ex Penna. GL)
and 50th Street (ex Central GL). GL also did some "incidental" in the Five Boros, but I can't recall seeing any refs. to GL at the Dixie.
While 44th St. at Eighth a convenient operation, near any existing sources seen refer to the Dixie as used by everyone else. IIRC, there
was a nearby, large advertising sign, painted on a building side, which promoted All American Bus Lines (later ABL, acquired by CTS).
While we are at it, haven't seen any references, but it is plausible that GL, much earlier on had established stops in Downtown Manhattan.
Canal Street? There is plenty in the GL histories which should clearly hint they had every reason for a station at or near Hudson Terminal.
