W.B.:
Waaaaay back when veteran Bill Jorgenson was anchoring the 10 0' Clock News on WNEW, my folks and I would always watch the entertainment report (Fridays) with Rona Barrett ("Greetings, everyone!")
Also on Fridays, ,on Eyewitness News, we'd also watch Bob Lape, ("The Eyewitness Gourmet")
I also remember John Johnson doing a report on the experiment to bring back double-deckers to "5th Aven-oo"......now THAT was a LOOOOONG time ago!

Which made the Mets the only "Noo Yawk" team to lose on Saturday.
But yeah. There is a stark difference in-between "En-Bee-Yay" "cham-peen-ships" for the "Ka-nicker-bockers" in terms of the transportation situtation. Both under and above ground, and on the "soiface." WAAAAAAAY different from 1973. There were only slight differences between 1970 and 1973, however.
And to think in the regular season, they were in "toid" place. |

W.B.:
Of course, the Mets HAD to be the ONOLY "Noo Yawk" team to LOSE,today of all days.
Back in '73, "The Poseidon Adventure" was in all the "thee-ate-ers", and fare on "The Tubes" was but THIRTY CENTS!!(and Your's Truly was in junior high!)
The Erie-Lackawanna, CNJ, and Penn-Central were nmot yet "fallen Flags", amn AMTRAK was but two years old!
BTW:
Ticker Tape parade for the "Kann-ikker-bokkers" is this "Thoisday"!

Also something else to think about . . .
The 53-year gap between NBA championship titles for the "Ka-nicker-bockers" was second only to the 54-year gap between Stanley Cup championships for fellow Garden denizens, the "Rayn-jers." You want to talk about stark differences? Well . . . for starters . . .
- In 1940, the Garden the Rangers played in was much different: at Eighth Avenue between 49th and 50th. (The current Garden opened in 1968 - on the spot of the ultimate "fallen flag," the original Penn Station.)
- In 1940, there were the then-relatively spanking new "Arnines," but also the "Eye-Are-Tee" had 'em all from the Gibbs cars to the "Lo-V's" underground (and, on the Flushing line, the World's Fair cars), and the MUDC's and Composites on the "el's"; and on the "Bee-Em-Tee," there were, underground, the "Broadway Battleships" and Triplexes, plus the original "Bloo-boids" and, on the 14th Street-Canarsie (and other) lines, the "Multis," plus everything above ground from gate cars to Q's. By 1994, all that was swept aside: all GOH'd R-32's to R-46's on the IND/BMT side, plus the SMEE's and still shiny new "Silverboids" on the IRT.
- In 1940, the buses that "soived" the Garden were NYCO's #10 Eighth Avenue line and Comprehensive Omnibus' M-3 49th-50th Streets Crosstown. FACCo still ruled the roost up and down Fifth "Aven-yew," and the "Little Red Bus That Could" was eight years old; Broadway and 42nd Street were still being "soived" by TARS streetcars (as was "Toid Aven-yah"). The buzzword in terms of bus models in 1940, especially with FACCo and NYCO, was "Yellow." By 1994, all of the above were run by the "Em-Tee-Yay," with the Fishbowls nearing the end of the line, the "Dangerfields' " line having already ended, and the "Are-Tee-Ess" ruling the roost.
- Most important of all: In 1940, all Manhattan avenues were crosstown. Between 1948 and 1966, almost all were converted to one-way one way or another (although Eleventh Avenue would be so converted in the 1980's).
- And basketball had not yet become a professional sport in 1940.
- In 1940, the "Pennsy" and the "Noo Yawk Central" still ruled the rails at their respective terminals, and the "Tubes" were still under the purview of McAdoo's "baby," the H&M. Plus it being 10 years before the "Port-of-Authority" opened its then-spanking new bus terminal. Which was turned into the monstrosity it would remain by the time the Rangers won their next Stanley Cup in '94. |

They still had most if not all of the ME-1's originally ordered, at the time of the Rangers' 1940 Stanley Cup win. By 1994, however, the "Fordy-Fours" on the line had undergone "GOH" as their subway cousins had. |

From when the new "Garden" opened ypin the later 60s, recall that, when the Knicks and "Rayn-Jer" fans were coming in from"The Is;and Of Great Length", the LIRR was still operating ancient MP-54s, ditto the Pennsy's relics, bringing in fans from "Joisey".......

Which no doubt would have been in "soivice" at the time of the "Rayn-jers' " 1940 Stanley Cup victory.
Of course, come 1973 - let alone the "Rayn-jers' " next Stanley Cup in 1994 - it was a wholly different setup car-wise along the "El-Eye-Double-Are" within "The Island of Great Length." |

Imagine had the Knicks LOST...........
The Knicks WON last night, and are NBA champs for the first time since 1973.........and yet.....unrestrained violence erupted.....TOTAL chaos.
Several school buses were torched and destroyed; some NYPD vehicles were also either destroyed or heavily damaged; a number of NYPD officers were also assaulted.
News reporters were also mobbed by screaming, vehement, "in your face" fans.....totally toxic.
Several FDNY trucks were also damaged; windows smashed, storefronts vandalized.
There were also incidents of shootings and stabbings; over 60 arrests were made.
Now........WHAT would have happened if the Knicks had LOST??
TOO sobering to contemplate.
Sad to say, too many sports fans these days (as seen in news reports) are clearly either intoxicated, "high",or just totally out of control.
"Fans" were stomping on vehicle roofs, store awnings, subway entrances, climbing traffic lights....and we are supposed to be CIVILIZED??
No wonder IND trains were not stopping at 34th Street.......all I am saying, that, is, thank heavens the Knicks WON.....I shudder to think of what might have happened, had they LOST.
Totally uncivilized and barbaric chaos.......and a hard slap in the face to TRUE (civilized) "Noo Yawk" sports fans............

"Noo Yawk" baseball "nooze" for Sunday............
Well, the overly swell-headed "Boulevardiers"(again) won, but at least the Mets ALSO won, and a nice lottle win for them, to "sweeten the pot".....
(for a change, HAPPY fans going home on the #7 trains!)

Yeah, shows just how much has changed for the worse over the 53-year gap between "En-Bee-Yay Finals" championships for the "Ka-nicker-bockers." I was hunkered down in my home the whole time last night, but I could hear the cheering from my window. |
