The "blame game" again in full swing..........

Both NJT and the LIRR are blacing blame on AMTRAK on the earlier fire;the MTA's "Mr. JAN-oh!" had some scathing words on AMTRAK management.(I'm hearing now rhat two AMTRAK work trains collided; one photo showed a nasty-looking fireball, viewed from the interior of a coach on the adjacent track)

Once again "aging infrastructure" is also being blamed; I'm mean, come on, that "aging infrastructure" has not been decently maintained since the ill-fated Penn-Central era.......what a way to run a railroad....... Sad

(good coverage on 4 and 7 at 4PM; 7 also had a nother good report at 11)

"TPTB" have been preparing for replacing these elderly tunnels with new ones - maybe that fire was meant as pressure to get that project going? I know some "disasters" have had the durndest of motives, over the decades . . .

W.B.:

If you will recall, the ex-PRR North River tubes were not so much in the news (at least, regarding eventual replacement) until after the severe salt water damage they received during Superstorm Sandy

I've seen early photos of the interior of the tunnels; the signals were quite similar in appearance to the old "Aitch & Em" signals used into the early 2000s.........

Here's an interesting page; note that the grades in the tynnels were the steepest on the PRR.

Good historical "in- depth" tech page.......

here's one of NJT's "Millenium Falcon" electrics at Newark; I shudder to think of all the :Star Wars" electronics inboard, that have the potential for short-circuiting,malfunctioning, and causing major damage.

If I were on a train hauled by one of these electronic monsters, rest assured Your's Truly would be riding in the LAST car in the consist.

I'll take a "GG-1"or an "E-60" anyday (or even an AEN-7)..............

The "M-7" MUs are now over 20 years old; these cars were indeed QUITE sophisticated and "hi tech"when they debuted.

Today, the "M-9s" are the "new kids on the block"already, the "7s" are electronically dated.

With the "9s" being even more electronically sophisticated, one can only wonder at hust how much more prone they are to electrical fures, circuitboard issues, and the like.

And, way back when, we all thought that now-classic "M-1" and "M-3" cars were the last word in sophistication........

Famed intergalactic space jockey "Han Solo" would indeed feel right at home in the cab of one of NJT's sinister-looking "Darth Vaders".......(the "Millenium Falcon" I am sure, had less electronics aboard than do these alien-looking "locomotives"........... Shocked

Light years removed, no doubt, from what trains ran in the heyday of the "Pennsy." Besides the GG-1's, of course.

NOT to be believed...........

According to 1010 WINS, "fire department activity" at the NJT command center in Kearny earlier first delayed....then HiALTED.....ALL "En-Jay-Tee" trains in the state.3

Lengthy delays on all lines followed resumption of service.

This was at about 12:20PM today.

DO YOU BELIEVE THIS.....ANOTHER "MELTDOWN"??!!?? Shocked Shocked

Something is SERIOUSLY wrong, here.....it's getting pretty roiutine (and bizarre), for sure........

Further:

What is going on, as of late, with this rash of electrical fures?

Malicious sabotage? (fhese days,y ou simply do not know)

Overloaded computer terminals/motherboards?

Cable/wire overheating?

Negligence?

Faulty equipment?

SOMETHING is going on, and it only seems to be getting worse, with incidents being not too far apart..........

IMHO.........

"Command Centers" for rail operations, especially those situated far from certain locations (especially junctions), in lieu of traditional interlocking towers that were located RIGHT where they BELONGED, and NOT many miles away.

Here, you has HUMAN BEINGS (not robots or hi-tech sofrwqare) watching over the trains, and manning the levers.

Way back in the cay, system-wide "commands"on the E-Land CNH were made via telephone (and telegraph) from "home base" at Jersey City and Hoboken.

Only several decades ago, towers were as commonplace as cracks in th esidewalk.

With most towersde-activated (or destroyed), again, there is NO BACKUP should a "command center"go down.

We've become far too sophisticated, far too fast, IMHO, especially in the rail sector...........
