While in the subject of "woik" cars.......
Looks like we'll never see a "Fordy Four" (or a "Fordy Six", for that matter) being retained for "woik" service.
Back in the "ME-1" era, looks like the SIRT only rostered non-powered MOW cars, hauled by diesels (or, perhaps, coup;ed to an "ME-1".......

....when you think about it, it IS interesting that neither the "Fordy-Fours" or the "Fordy Sixes" were converted into MOW cars, after retirement, not even hauling trash trains......

Yeah. Whilst I have seen, in passing, "Fordy-Toos" in "woik soivice." |

W.B.:
Go figure!
Still odd that none of the old "ME-1s" ever were converted into SIRT "woik" cars.
Ditto, the IRT "Hi-Vs".
On the other hand, once upon a time, NO SHORTAGE of prewar IRT cars ("Lo-Vs") in "woik" service, through the 1970s...........

No pride, no dignity, unprofessional conduct while on duty........
Heard on a report on 1010 WINS earlier, that, on two recent occasions, a (less than professional) Staten Island Ferry skipper took two drunken female German tourists through "secure" areas of the ferryboat "DOROTHY DAY", before allowing them to handle the controls in the wheelhouse.
During the report, you could hear the drunken giggling and laughing going full lilt ;the women were seen drinking alcoholic beverages at the Whitehall terminal prior to boarding.
The incidents are now under investigation; disciplinary measures will be take,i
And to think, back in the day, the "skippers" of the SI Ferry were the epitome of pride and proffesionilism, and of the highest calibre............sadly, like all other walks of life nowadays (including transit) those days are now long gone.
IMHO, the errant captain in question should be dismissed.....NO EXCUSE for such idiotic behavior......ANYTHING might have happened.
As a lad, these "Staten Island Skippers" were indeed proud men that a young boy could look up to (I certainly did).....sadly, those days are now long gone......

Seriously, the SI Ferry skippers were always the height of pride and decorum......of course, all it takes is one bad apple to spoli the bunch......

I'd say I was lucky that, of my recent trips, I was not on THAT one. |

W.B.:
Back in 1985 and 1986, when I was a volunteer at the SI Ferry Maritime Museum at St. George each weekend, I was VERY fortunate to get to know a (now deceased) senior captain, one who had been on the job for over 30 years.
I was treated to several memorable pilothouse rides on "KENNEDY"-class boats (where I listened raptly!) to his many interesting stories of his many distinguished years on the Ferry.
He was a true gentleman, and I was most fortunate to be in his company (he took several photos of Yours Truly in the pilothouse, but I DID NOT operate the boat, nor would have I wanted to!)
"Cap'n Ted" would have been indeed disgusted, had he been around today, and learned of the asine shenanigans aboard the "DORTHY DAY".........

Interesting photos and stats on the "Es-Eye" Ferry fleet; I am reminded here of the massive Washington State Ferries (which also still carry vehicles)
Unlike the insipid little "FINOs"("Ferries In Name On;y") that now crisscross the harbor, the "Es-Eye" boats, modern as they are, STILL look like a FERRYbOAT, and not a futuristic species of overgrown water bug......
This is an interesting page......

Interesting that the "John F. Kennedy" is now the oldest of the fleet (having both preceded and outlasted the "Es-Eye-Are" R-44's a.k.a. ME-2's; I count myself as largely having crisscrossed the "SSgt Michael Ollis" and "Sandy Ground" in my most recent trips to the "Isle of Staten." |

W.B.:
Recall that the "KENNEDY" was retired about two years ago; she was to be converted into a floating comedy club (in Long Island, I believe)
Sad that, outside of this lone survivor, NONE of the older Staten Island boats survives.
As the SI Ferry has been a NY iconic for wellover a century, you might think that, at least a FEW of the old boats would still survive., as proud reminders of a historic "Noo Yawk" institution.
Out in "Frisco", where the last double-ended ferries ran in 1958, several old ferries survive today, noy only on the Bay itself, but elsewhere.
Wish that had been the case, here.....
