Extension of PRR electrification south of DC...........
On a now-defunct rail discussion forun (where I was a co-moderator) I had started a discussion on what "might have been", had the PRR extended electrification south of DC, and terminating at Atlanta.
Had the PRR extended its wires to Atlanta, there would have been no swap from electric to diesel (or, in earlier years, steam) at DC.
Thus, southbound trains could have been hauled behind GG-1's from New York to Atlanta.
On reality ,it would seem that such a grand undertaking would have been economically unfeasible.
Just an interesting "what if" to ponder..........

The catenary actually did extend into Virginia...at least as far as the former Potomac Yard...

Correct you are, my friend!
And, recall, after the New Haven became part of the ill-fated Penn-Central in 1969, "GG-1"s began appearing up at New Haven, making for VERY STRANGE bedfellows indeed, alpngside NH's flamboyant "FL-9s" and "EP-5s"("Jets"!)
