On this day in 1941..........

The Dyre Avenue line begins shuttle operation between Dyre Avenue and the former "Westchester" terminal at E. 189th Street.

This line utilized the abandoned Bronx ROW of the former NYW&B, which was abandoned in December of 1937.

Refurbished INTERBOROUGH elevated gate cars were assigned to this new line.

Steel "Hi-V" subway cars replaced the old El cars sometime around 1954.

Interestingly, this interesting little line was indeed a conglomeration; IRT rolling stock was used, along with surplus BMT signals.....also, the line was operated as part of the IND!

Catenary was retained over the express tracks for some time, in hopes of a revival of "Westchester" express service, which, of course, never happened.

Through subway service to Brooklyn to Dyre Avenue did not begin until 1957, when the line was connected to the IRT "main line".......

Here's an early photo of operation on the Dyre Avenue shuttle; note that the old "Westchester" catenary was then still in place..........

Agreed!

This rare old photo indeed showcases just how interesting the line was in its early days; for years, after the change booths shut down for the night, conductors collected fares on the trains, using a fare box, in the best "Toonerville" manner! Very Happy

The old El cars were surplus from the Manhattan Els, which were then in their decline; it would not be until 1957 when IRT trains from Brooklyn began serving the line, as I had noted previously.

Unless they are rail buffs, the riders of this line have noidea that thiswas once part of an opulent, modern, stately, high-speed electric railway.........

In those years, there seemed to be as much a "Toonerville Trolley" vibe as with the SIRT in the last years of the ME-1's.

W.B.:

Agreed.

That "Toonerville" atmosphere was even more entranced by the 1907 deck-roof "Hi-Vs", which, indeed had a distinct "streetcar" persona about them......... Wink

"Toonerville" up in "da Bronx"*............. Wink

*(odd indeed that these unique cars were equipped with deck roofs, instead of the usual railroad roof)

Cyberider:

There were only 50 cars in ths series of "Hi-V" deck roof cars, built by ACF between 1907 and 1908.

All were motors; they were retired about 1957, replaced by the new "R" types.

As built (as was the case with the other early IRT cars) they were not equipped with automatic center doors (these were installed a few years later as traffic increased)

Without center doors, the cars in this series indeed resembled streetcars!

One car (#3662) was saved; today it resides at the Shore Line Trolley Museum, at East Haven.

Interesting also, that the H&M's original cars (Class "A") built in 1908, also featured deck roofs.

However, all following H&M car classes, from"B" through "J", featured monitor roofs, which were reminiscent of those used on the IRT's "R-12s/14s" and 1938 WF cars........

Here's a train of the original (1908) deck-roof Class "A" cars at Exchange Place (Jersey City), prior to the official opening of Hudson Terminal (lower Manhattan) in 1909..........

Besides the 1907-1908 IRT deck roof cars (ACF) the only other deck roof cars to be used in subway service were the second-hand SIRT "ME-1s", which were retired about 1960, after running on the BMT for several years.......

Not to mention the IND's R-10's (a.k.a. "Thunderbirds"), plus the prototypical rebuilt R-7A which was the model for same.
