Lots of interesting history there. Too bad they couldn't have taken the NYCMTA to court to prevent the end of elevated service until the 2nd Ave. subway was built.

Cyberider:

It is ironic, especially when you remember that the IND's 6th Avenue Subway was being built DIRECTLY UNDER the 6th Avenue El, which was still in operation, in the late 1930s.

This scenario should have been followed through when the 3rd Avenue El was still in operation; had the SAS been under construction when the 3rd Avenue El was still in operation, the new subway could have replaced the E in a smooth transition.

Even more ironic, is that the Bronx section of the 3rd Avenue El remained in service until 1973, nearly 20 years AFTER the Manhattan section was abandoned........

I also thought it was interesting that the Bronx section persisted that long. I believe it was built more heavily than the Manhattan section and thus could handle heavier equipment such as the R-12's and 14's at the end. I've probably read it somewhere but I can't remember what reason was given for it finally ending too. Not enough patronage or ?

By the early 1970s, the Bronx, sadly, was in a steep decline ;the crime rate was rapidly rising, and many long-time business were closing, and large numbers long-time residents were moving oit. wee moving away.

It was thought by some that the removal of the El in the Bronx would "improve the "quality of life" for the borough, but this was not the case, as crime continued to soar, and block upon lock of apartment buildings and stores lay gutted and ruined.

MaBSTOA buses replaced the El trains; many riders did not relish the idea of waiting at corner bus stops after dark, after the El had closed.

Recall how, in Chicago, CA&E and North Shore interurban trains used the "L" to access the Loop; there had been some talks, early on, about extending the NYW&B into Manhattan's business districts, via the El; this would have been a very costly and complicated project, requiring the rebuilding of the El structures to handle the heavy steel trains, cutting back platforms, relocating signals, etc.......

In 1963..........

Prewar IRT cars still ruled the "Toid Aven-ih" El up in "da Bronx", and ex-"Soiface" buses were still commonplace.......

In 1973, ten years later...........

The once-commonplace, iconic IRT "Lo-Vs" are now bidding a sad farewell to the soon-to-be-closed "Toid Aven-uh" El; MaBSTOA buses now are nowr the order of the day.......

When this "Gathering Of The Fishbowls" was caught on camera, up in "da Bronx", back in 1973, the venerable "Toid Aven-uh" El had already been closed down forever.

Today, the once-commonplace Fishbowls are now but fond memories,, as are the rattling, clattering El trains themselves......... Sad

4879, then running on the Bx55, was one of the (T6H-5309A) "new kids on the block," just arrived at Kingsbridge either that or the prior month. Its arrival (and the other 59, numbered within 4860-4919) enabled the retirement of the last of the 1960 ex-FACL/ST "Jetsons," likewise those ol' reliables likewise following the "Toid Aven-yah" el into oblivion, people's memories, and the history books.

Further.........

In "WELCOME ABOARD THE GM NEW LOOK BUS" (McKane/Sqyier), on page #80, there is a photo of MaBSTOA Fishbowl #4841, a "T6H-5309A".

Caption:

".....representing model "T6H-5309A" is MABSTOA 4841 at 149th Street and Third Avenue. These buses were bought to replace the 3rd Avenue El, from which this view was taken....."

Quick question:

When were the last "stoa" Fishbowls retired (the buses that replaced the El trains in '73)

What routes were they then serving?

Appreciate info............

Unrebuilt: 1993. Rebuilt by Blitz: 1995. No word on where assigned or what routes they ran.

And technically, the '73 " 'stoa" Fishbowls didn't JUST replace the "els." They enabled the retirement of the last of the 1960 ex-FACL and ST "Jetsons."
