It now costs MORE to ride "the tubes" than it does the NYC subways......oh, joy! Razz

I haven't been on PATH in the last year, and if they don't take MetroCards, I don't think I'll set foot on "the Tubes" for the rest of my life. Something tells me "OMNY" is not accepted on PATH.

W.B.:

Given how the "Pee-Yay" has modernized and homogenized "the tubes" over the past few decades, you won't be missing much.

So little of the "McAdoo era" still remains today.....and, with RFWs all gone, and traditional block signals now history, well, I certainly have no desire to go "down the tubes".

Threat of crime/random attacks while in the system further deters me.

And, to think, back in the day, Your's Truly railfanned every inch of "the tubes"(and having a hoot of a time!), several decades back

I indeed "communed" with the spirit of the illustrious and industrious Mr. McAdoo on a QUITE intomate basis, back in those days.

Last ride I took was not long after the "new" WTC terminal opened, when the tracks were still exposed to the sunlight.......

Last I was on PATH, they DID accept MetroCards. Apparently as you say, this is no longer the case. Oh well . . .

W.B.:

I STILL have (in its small holder) the PATH fare card I last used oin that fateful morning of 9/11 (HOB-WTC)

Why PATH ever decided to eliminate tokens at all, and switch to exact fare (30 cents) still does not make sense to me.....I always found tokens both convenient and traditional.....

Which is most likely why PATH, "Em-Tee-Yay" and other transit agencies did away with them and went all "digital" . . .

W.B,:

If I am not mistaken, the oft-forgotten Roosevelt Island Tram was the last transit operation in "Noo Yawk" to use tokens...............

I am willing to wager that only the most astute of rail historians (or older fellows in feneral) would see the connection between the modern clothing chaon and the original operating company of "the Tubes" (PATH)

The cha in's distinctive logo easily could have been that of today's "H&M", if it were still an independent company.......

Ah, you must've read my "pernts" on SubChat. It is through my knowledge of rail history that I see the irony in two H&M stores each near a PATH terminus.

W.B.:

In my area, as a lad, most folks NEVER referred to PATH as "PATH"; it was always "PATH tubes", "Hudson Tubes", or, most often, simply, "the Tubes".

A number of folks from Jersey City simply referred to the system as the "Aitch & Em".

The same folks referred to the old "MONTGOMERY & WEST SIDE" buses as "The Red Bus"...... Wink

Which makes sense, given that, with CBTC and all that, PATH's been going down "the Tubes" of late . . .

W.B.:

Back in '83, Your's Truly had an H&M/PATH Diamond Jubilee exhibit in our local library; it was also covered by our local newspapers (also, the monthly NYSE employee newsletter!)

PATH invited me to take part in the celbration (which, of course, I did!); I even got to meet the grandson of Mr. McAdoo himself (he looked [and dressed!] so much like his iconic grandfather it was uncanny!)

Had a brief, interesting talk with this fine gentleman, who told me; "Grandfather would have enjoyed meeting you."

WHAT A COMPLIMENT Very Happy

What a memorable day; so very fiotunate I was deemed worthy to attend! Very Happy

Probably the only time PATH even acknowledged the very existence of H&M (I), it seems. This was when there was still something resembling diversity in their fleet, from the 1958 K/MP's to the PA-1's, 2's and 3's.

W.B.:

I still recall when "the tubes" celebrated their 100th anniversary in 2008; what many expected to be a big bang of a celebration was but a pathetic, pallid whimper. Sad

Would have loved to have seen a couple of "K" cars painted black, and sporting period "Aitch & Em" logos, but that was not to be.

Very little media coverage of this ho-hum event.

Mr. McAdoo's "tubes" indeed deserved better....... Sad
