"The tracks to the track...............

For decades, both the PRR and the CNJ operated special "Race Trains" to the historic Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport.

The PRR trains operated from New York (via Newark) while the CNJ trains operated (until 1967) from Jersey City and Broad Street, Newark.

Four stub tracks terminated at the grandstand entrance; some of the "Race Trains" often exceeded 12 cars in length.

The PRR and the CNJ were each assigned two tracks.

These trains, after unloading their passengers, would take turns reversing on a nearby wye, to enable them to run back to the city.

After 1967, the CNJ's trains only ran from Newark (Penn Station); however, in the 70s, for a time, the "Race Train" started in Raritan, ran through to Bayonne, changed ends, and then rab down the BY&LB (via Elizabethport) down to Monmouth Park.

The PRR/PCC trains ran from New York (engine change at South Anboy)

After Conrail, only one train remained in operation; NJT's "Pony Express" (long discontinued) was the last rail service to the track.

Into the 1990s, only two tracks remained in place, but only one was still iin use by the Pony Express.

Later, NJT severed this track as well, and patrons now had to detrain across the street from where the tracks once ran to the grandstand.

With the advent of push-pulls, the old wye was abandoned; sections of it remain today, rusying away in the weeds.

Both the CNJ and PRR/P-C trains also offered snack/beverage service.............

Today's NJT "NORTH JERSEY COAST LINE" was once the CNJ/PRR NY&LB..............

The first section to be electrified was between South Amboy and Matawan, on this day in 1982.

Today, the wires stretch down as far south (railroad west) as Long Branch, where a yard is located

"Farewell To The GG-1" specials in early 1983 marked the first time a "G" ventured south of South Amboy (South Amboy had been the limit for PRR's electrification on the NY&LB)

In the 1970s, the CNJ operated not only elderly heavyweight cars on the NY&LB,butl also, assorted coaches from the BN and the GN, as well as assorted ex-through line streamlined cars, including an ex PRR diner-lounge that had once served on the "CONGESSIONAL", and an ex-FEC observation car.

Club cars were also then in use on the rush-hour trains.

A lot of colorful and interesting diversity on this route, back in the day..............

Back in the day, the LIRR once rostered a diverse ":rolling museum", when it came to parlor car operations.

These colorful, classic-era cars came from many "fallen flag" railroads, and each one of these handsome cars had an interesting story to tell...............
