TOTALLY AGREE!
Recall, the British author who, sometime back, penned the excellent little "Routemaster" book, "THE BUS WE LOVED", who flatly stated that "today's buses are obviously designed by disturbed minds"..........'nuff said.......

Sobering thought.........
With the MTA's Museun Bus fleet long since sidelined, a whole generation of young folks will NEVER have the wonderful chance to actually RIDE aboard a historic "Noo Yawk" bus....and, indeed, they are the poorer for it..........

Still wonder who was (literally) asleep at the switch, when the original, real-llfe "Jackie Gleason" bus was retired, and not earmarking such a historically-significant bus for preservation........
What great treasures we've lost, due to short-sightedness.......

Yep. Brought an end to the automated subways used (none of which were the R-17's that were so heavily damaged they ended up scrapped). It also led to the rebuilding of the entire eastern terminus of the shuttle, and concrete platforms (the platforms had heretofore been wood, creating the perfect conditions for a devastating fire such as that). |

Yout's Truly (at a tender age!) had QUITEa time coaxing Mom to take me on the automated shuttle (she did not like the idea of a driverless train!), until a friendly conductor told her that a MOTORMAN was up in the cab (THANK YOU, Mr. Conductor!)
I had long been enamored with the shuttle, and Mom and I bounced back and forth between TSQ and GCT too many times to count, over the years!)
LOVED The Nedicks at the TSQ end!
Last time I rode the shuttle was back around 2003, when "Silverboid" R-62s were running the line.......

Just my opinion................
The automated TSQ shuttle was about as "hi tech"as Your's Truly could get; at least, traditional block signals were then still in charge of the show........

Yet another reason Your's Truly is more than glad that he no longer have to ride aboard ANY sort of transit vehicle (it's been over 10 years since my last NJT ride, on an insipid NABI, on the #751)

Interesting historic photos, "pseudo IRT"............
In the "IMAGES OF RAIL" book, "JAMAICA STATION" (Morrison) there are two interesting 1930 photos, showing the LIRR's Morris Park repair barn, reach bay hosting a set of "MP-41s".
With the exception of the large headlights (and vestibule steps) these photos are indeed reminiscent of seeing the lookalike IRT "Gibbs" cars, laying over at the 180th Street shops!
As I've mentioned previously, even the interiors of these cars were identical to the "INTERBOROUGH's" early rolling stocl, right down to the leather straps for standees!

Related "INTERBOROUGH" note........
On this day in 1950, the distinctive "COMPOSITE" cars were retired from service on the "Toid Aven-uh" El.
Unfortunate not one of these unusual cars was preserved.........

And in many ways, "da Bronx" has never really recovered from that discontinuance. |

Sadly, I must admit I totally agree with you 100%.
In a book I'ver read many, many times over, a Jewish family from the Lower East Side moves up to the Bronx in 1916; last book in the series is set between 1919 and 1920.
Folks strolling through Crotona Park well after dark, no fear of riding the El or the subway, (regardless of the time of day or night), neighborhoods that were decades removed from becoming combat zones.....well, you get the picture.
I was always greatly interested in the rich and colorful history of "da Bronx"....truly sad, that, like somany other urban areas around the country, "danger" seems to be the byword.
To those misguided folks who thought that the removal of theEL in "da Bronx" would improve the quality of life in that borough....well. let's just say that have been proven wrong, in more ways than one......
