One can only wonder what impact the current war in Iraq is going to have on the cruise ship industry, with the costs of fuel soaring daily, with no relief in sight.

IMHO, I do not see "smooth sailing" for the cruise ship companies, anytime in the near term.......... Sad

They have long had a clause in their passenger cruise contract giving them the right to add a fuel surcharge to fully paid cruises in the event the price of crude oil exceeds a specified cost per barrel.

The world political situation has impacted cruises since the sanction's against Russia for invading Ukraine, by cancelling all calls to St. Petersburg on Baltic cruises, and to a lesser degree by cancelling calls to Siberia on trans Pacific cruises.
With the war on Iraq, ships are no longer sailing via the Suez Canal, nor calling at Jordan, Israel, Egypt, or anywhere else in the Middle East. Several cruises are reroute around South Africa instead to reach Europe.

The loss of service to these ports has sometimes been a boon for other ports, in unaffected areas. For example, instead of doing an Eastern Mediterranean cruise, passenger's are electing to do a Caribbean one...

Greatly appreciate this additional information; indeed, a "ripple effect" has been affecting the cruise shop industry for some years now.

One can only wonder how the current War (and high fuel costs) would be affecting trans-Atlantic passenger shipping, if the companies in business during the 1960s were still in operation today.

Also, had TWA, PAN AM, BOAC, et al, still be in business; the current world political climate and its ever-spreading fallout would be affecting them as well, especially with overseas flights (the fuel-guzzling "CONVAIR 880" would have been grounded for sure)

I heard on the news earlier that UNITED has already cancelled many of its flights.

Even the humble "CIRCLE LINE", for certain, will not be immune from the soaring fuel prices; with the SI Ferry, one wonders if there will be reduced service (especially during off-peaks) fewer active boats, etc..........

........from what I have been reading, the cruise shop operators are indeed facing strong headwinds, regarding soaring fuel prices.
NORWEGIAN has stated they plan to "consume less fuel"; this, of course, could either translate into shorter cruises being offered, and/or the cancellations of others.

Then, too, higher fares and fuel surcharges......

All of the above... Wink

In addition, running at slower speeds also saves on fuel, but that can mean eliminating some ports of call on some cruises, while still having the same total days.

Something is telling me, that, when these monolithic vessels were being constructed, few, if any, could foresee what is transpiring today....... Sad
