(SEE PREVIOUS POSTS/PHOTOS)

Here is a very rare photo from 1915, showing a handsome, shiny new "2600" series "Compromise" roof car at PS's massive Passaic Wharf facility in Newark.

It should also be noted that PS did not begin numbering ESSEX Division streetcar and bus lines until 1927.

The "ORANGE" line later became the "21 ORANGE", and was a subway-surface line until early 1952...........

Another rare photo from 1916; here we see another new "Compromise roof" car, laying over atone of the two yards at the "ROSEVILLE" (Newark) car house.

It should also be noted that the famed "triangle-in-a-circle" PS insignia did not appear on the rolling stock until the later 1920s.......

Interestingly enough, by the late 1930s ,all HUDSON Division "Compromise roof" and deck roof cars were converted to single-ended operation.

Some cars had their offside doors paneled over, while others had them retained intact, but were no longer used; the forward trolley poles were also removed

Controls were also removed from what was now the rear platform.

Seating from scrapped cars was installed in the rear platform areas.

On the ESSEX Division, however, all remaining cars remained double-ended until they were retired.........

This late 1940s photo of "Compromise roof" car #2641 clearly shows that, while the now-inoperable offside doors have been retained, the folding platform steps have been removed.......

Between 1942 and the end of WW2, double-ended streetcar operation returned to the HUDSON Division, when two new "wartime" lines began service, using a group refurbished double-ended "Compromise roof" cars that had been in dead storage at Passaic Wharf (Newark) for several years.

These lines served the legions of war workers working at the Federal Shipyards and Western Electric plant in Kearny.

Both lines were made up mostly of a "patchwork" of abandoned lines, with some mew trackage being installed at certain locations.

This small group of cars were the last double-enders on the HUDSON Division...........

Cyberider:

Indeed!

The last surviving PS streetcars, as you know, were retired from "CITY SUBWAY" service in early 1954.

The oldest deck roof cars then in use were over 40 years old; the "Compromise roof" cars were over 30 years old.

After the ex-TCRT PCCs had all arrived on the property, several "Compromise roof" cars were stored in the lower level of the old PS Terminal (then still in use by buses), in case of emergencies.

The elderly cars were retained as "reserves" for only several months, before all were trucked off PS property and were scrapped.........

These late 1953/early 1954 photos show the last of the old PS cars still in "CITY SUBWAY "service, while the PCCs were being used to re-train operators; indeed, a long and colorful era was ending..........

Transitions, back in the day, were interesting. Transitions, from the stuff we loved to the new stuff we didn't, was painful.

Cyberider:

Agreed 100%.

Once upon a time, a "latest model" transit vehicle meant, sleek, stylish, up-to-date, and ATTRACTIVE.

Those days, sadly, are gone forever; we are now overrun with giant mutated caterpillars, insipid shoe boxes, and slithering electric eels.Razz

Cyberider:

Indeed it was for me. Sad

I grew up with the Newark PCCs, railfanned the Subway extensively in later years, and always derived so much intense pleasure at being able to experience "living traction history". Very Happy

Today, like so much of what I remember from years past, transit-wise, the "City Subway", the streetcar subway I knew and loved from my earliest years, is now but fond, cherished memory.......how fortunate I am to have so many wonderful memories.......
