The MBTA has issued its preliminary service plan for 2008. Public hearings will be held in the coming weeks, so these plans are not final.

The full document can be viewed here - About the MBTA - Preliminary 2008 Service Plan

Highlights of the plan include:

Routes to be eliminated -

6 South Station - Haymarket (some route 4 AM trips would be routed via the North End to replace the route 6 buses)

48 Jamaica Plain Minibus (to be replaced weekdays by a route 29 diversion to Amory St. Apartments)

500 Riverside - Federal & Franklin Sts. via Mass Turnpike

SL3 City Point - South Station (Silver Line service)

Service and/or route expansions -

- Route 4 to be extended to Boston Marine Industrial Park

- Route 88 tripper service would be operated during the AM rush hour between Clarendon Hill and Davis

- Sunday service would be instituted on routes 136/137 by operating a loop service via both branches

- Route 222 would be extended to Pleasant and Washington Sts in Weymouth

- Some route 225 weekday trips would be extended to South Shore Hospital and South Weymouth

- Some peak hour route 554 trips would operate a variation via Forest St, Waverley Oaks Road and Trapelo Road

- SL2 route to be simplified and service frequency expanded

Other adjustments -

- The Sunday morning headway on the Mattapan trolley would be reduced from 30 minutes to 20 minutes

- Some late-night route 26 trips to be replaced by expanded route 21 service

- Some peak hour route 57 trips would be short-turned at Oak Square

- The Needham St. branch of route 59 would become the primary service and the Eliot St. variation would only be used by approximately one-third of weekday trips

- All weekday evening and Saturday evening route 89 trips would operate to Davis instead of Clarendon Hill

- Saturday route 99 service would be reduced, but remaining trips would operate through the Gateway Center shopping area

- Some weekday route 117 trips would be short-turned at Broadway and Central Ave in Revere

- Some rush hour route 136 and 137 trips would be short-turned at Oak Grove instead of operating through to Malden Center.

- Route 170 would be cut back from Bedford to Waltham

- Routes 214 and 216 would be combined all day on Saturday

- Some off-peak route 430 trips would be operated through the Granada Highlands complex

- Some route 441 and 442 peak hour trips would originate at Wonderland instead of Haymarket

The final service plan has been approved by the MBTA board - it's not on the Authority website yet, but the Boston Globe has a summary here.

Routes SL3 and 6 are to be eliminated as planned, but the 48 and 500 are saved. The 48 will continue to operate for at least one year, while the 500 will stay but have service reduced to every 60 minutes. Several other minor modifications have also been made to the proposals, but most will go through as planned. The changes will be implemented during either the spring or summer ratings periods.
