(SEE PREVIOUS POST)

Also.........

At one time, Philadelphia had one of the largest fleets of PCCs in nation;from what I've read, scrapping of the oldest carswas just beginning at the time of the infamous Woodland carbarn fire in 1975 (multiple cars were lost)

Philly's fleet was also diverse, with replacement cars coming from other properties. including the TTC.

After the new KAWASAKI LRVs entered service in the early 1980s, the fate of the PCCs was indeed sealed (of course, this also held true for the RED ARROW's rolling museum fleet.Sad

Not to mention SEPTA's many "temporary" conversions to bus routes.

Again, the aforementioned book is indeed MORE than worth the price1 Wink

Just received my copy of "SOUTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA TROLLEYS" ("IMAGES OF RAIL").

This excellent book is a MUST for Philadelphia trolley (and PCC!) fans.

A large number of excellent PCC photos are in this book; also, a number of excellent "Red Arrow" photos.

There are also many interesting trolleybus photos, as well as bus photos.

For the PCC fan alone, this book is a MUST for ANY traction library! Very Happy

I purchased my copy for $17.00 (and MORE than worth it!) Wink

Glad you got a copy! (long before I purchased mine!) Rolling Eyes

Certainly was great seeing al lof those classic PCCs, not to mention the older rolling stock, as well as those classic Red Arrow cars, trolleybuses, and buses.......NO WONDER Philadelphia (like Chicago) was such a Mecca for transit buffs, back in the day! Very Happy

Lots of good info and photos for sure but too bad this series of books isn't in a larger format with darker print. My vision isn't great and have to use a magnifying glass to read them.

Cyberider:

I am sure you are not alone on this.

I HAVE noticed, though, in some "IMAGES OF RAIL" books, there are some photos that seem "washed out", or, perhaps "overexposed" might be a better word to use.

I do not know if this is because of the age of the photos, or, some issue during printing.

Most photos I have found in these books (and I have many!) are of very good quality, all the better to "spot" other interesting details that may be in the background........

In 2027, SEPTA will be taking delivery of a fleet of giant, mutated electric eels to replace the bland, boxy Kawasaki LRV's that are now over 40 years old.

These are NOT 'trolleys", NOR are they "streetcars"; they are but massive, mutated, hideous, human-ingesting electric eels......... Razz Razz Razz Razz Razz Razz Razz Razz Razz

These make the Kawasaki LRV's look almost respectable.

Cyberider:

TOTALLY agree.

Today's LRV's (no matter WHERE they are operating) are nothing more than giant, mutated insects and slithering serpents, designed by those whose tastes clearly run towards acid highs after a Jimmy Hendrix concert. Sad

Man, do I miss those sleek and PCCs that I grew up with, on what USED to be the City Subway in Newark. Sad

So very grateful I have so many wonderful memories of these classic, iconic streetcars...... Very Happy

Well said, NYO.

I've never gotten to ride a PCC in regular service. The only place I've ridden them was at the Orange Empire Trolley Museum 50 years ago. Too late for PCC's but I rode the Boeing LRV's in San Francisco and the Breda whatever they ares in Cleveland/Shaker Heights. Saw a few dilapidated PCC's in the yard in SF. This was in the late 80's, before the F line with it's PCC's. Too late for me to travel now and, besides, SF is not my kind of place.

Cyberider:

Besides Newark's PCCs during my twq visits to Boston (1991 and 1997) I took several rides on the PCCs running on the Mattapan line (a LOT of fun, and took a lot of photos!) Very Happy

Didn't get to ride any PCCs or "Red Arrow" cars during my two weekend trips to Philly (both during 1982), BUT, I DID get to ride the iconic "Bullets" and "Straffords" on the old P&W, as well as the 1960 "Almond Joy" BUDD cars from 1960 on the Market-Frankford El, as well as the prewar BSS cars....again, I am MORE than fortunate that I got to savor "classic traction" from these "living museums"! Remembering the classic, long-gone "all electrics" that once clattered and clanged their way along Philadelphia's streets..........
