W.B.:

I would tend to agree!

I VERY much doubt that said train with "mechanical issues" was a "Fordy-Four" or an "ME-1"! Wink

W.B,:

Earlier this half-hour on Eyewitness News, reporter N.J. Burkett was reporting in the middle of a nearly-deserted intersection (Amsterdam and 72nd; IRT headhouse in background)

A "BINO" running on the "Bx11" was approaching (on his left) and passed by (Hey! A "BINO" that was ACTUALLY not DISABLED by the "fluffy white stuff?) Shocked Shocked Shocked

Further:

On the 6pm (Euewitness News) broadcast, reporter N.J. Burkett gave another report from the same location; this time, two other "BINOs" passed by, on different routes (again, TOTALLY surprised they are even running; not surprisingly, no "Slinkies" in sight).......

A Bronx bus in Manhattan? Shouldn't that have been the M11? Because at Amsterdam and 72nd, the M7 and M11 stop there.

W.B.:

You, certainly, are far more an expert on this than Your's Truly; but, the sign on that "BINO" indeed read "Bx11".

Possibly some sort a reroute, due to the weather, or an incorrectly sign display?

Then again, this "Joisey Boy" is only guessing...........

Also........

N.J.s' report also included footage of the "Eye-Are-Tee", showing veteran "Silverboid" R-62s on the "1".

".....the subways are operating pretty much normally......"

It was likely headed to "da Bronx" if it was going up Amsterdam . . .

Gotcha! Wink

I've always associated Amsterdam with the cream and red conduit streetcars of the "Toud Aven-uh Railway"........... Wink

Eyewitness News (11 PM edition)........

Reporter N.J. Burkett was (live) in a TOTALLY DESERTED 7th Avenue, this time around; quick footage showed a "Bx12" MCI temporarily stuck on what appeared to be a side street.

As to the subways......

".....outside of a few minor issues with the '7' and 'Q' lines earlier, the subways 'powered through' with few side effects......."

Obviously the newfabgled "Staten Island Rattlers" preformed pretty well, considering, as did the other NTTs that now dominate the subway lines.....Your's Truly was pleasantly surprised, overall(!!) Wink

Also:

Was also surprised, with all the hi-tech M-7/9 MUs in charge of things on the MN and "El-Eye-Double-Are", that no major issues were reported.

"En-Jay-Tee"?

Coming back in phases, starting with light rail; buses MIGHT run by late morning, and the trains possibly back by early afternoon.......

Speaking of Amsterdam Avenue, this, this nostalgic (if "gritty") scene ("stoa") dates back to the late "batwing" era.........

Sounds like the bells will toll sooner rather than later for the evergreen "Fordy-Sixes" and "Brighton Belles," not to mention the "Silverboids" . . . given what was said about the "adequate" performance of the "En-Tee-Tee's" under such adverse conditions.

Also . . . as to "En-Jay-Tee's" chickening out . . . sounds like a might contrast to the ol' "Pea-Ess" and all the private companies (i.e. NHBL, Red & Tan, Orange & Black, Inter-City), no?; not to mention what rail companies operated in "Joisey" in the days when those that took you to and fro were built like tanks rather than tin cans.

W.B.:

Uncanny how we think alike; I, also, was thinking, that, given the "better than expected" performances of the current NTT subway/SIR fleet, that just might give the "Em-Tee-Yay" the incentive they need/want to retire the last of the non-NTT veterans.I had to come up with a new "moniker" for the PATH fleet; given that PATH never had to shut down entirely is saying SOMETHING a bit "positive"(!!)) about the {"Pee-Yay"5s")....heck, I'll give credit where credit is due! Wink

The prewar "joint service" cars were known as the "Red McAdoos".....perhaps "Blue McAdoos" would aptly suit the current fleet? Rolling Eyes

Indeed, the old "fallen flag"bus companies I grew up with so long ago (like the railroads), which I recall so well into adulthood, would, in the event of a heavy snow, simply would keep on "sluggin'it out"until the weather got TOO severe.

As a lad, I can only remember two 1960s snowstorms that caused the shutdown of all the buses in the area.

Mom used to reminisce thus:

"......when you were little, when the buses stopped running, you KNEW it was a BAD snowstorm......."

Indeed,I WELL remember those days....and you DID NOT want to take on an Old Look, a WHITE, MACK, or an ACF-BRILL in GOOD weather, if you knew what was safe and sane....(!!)Shocked Rolling Eyes

NJT UPDATE (from special report on CBS/ABC; CEO of NJT speaking)...........

".......all rail lines, including light rail, are back up and running, with the exception of the Gladstone and Pascack Valley lines......"

"......trains will be running on a modified weekend schedule tomorrow......"

"......eighty-five bus lines, including those connecting to the Port Authority Terminal, are again running, but on a Saturday schedule........"

It seems pretty clear that these newfangled systems usually perform better under winter conditions (more or less) than in the summer. Have you noticed too?
