Those of you who posted regularly at BTN would know that my favorite PBL was Queens Surface Corp./Queens Transit Corp. (I'm not old enough to recall when that line was known as Queens-Nassau Transit.) I've not seen any official or unofficial QTC rosters, so a few years ago I set out to build one myself. What is shown below most certainly is not the product of any scholarly research on my part (in complete contrast to the fine work done on GBL and TCC rosters and histories by the late Alan Bromberger). Rather, the following roster was cobbled together from GM Production Lists at OMOT's website, and from Bus Rosters On The Web. It does not include Steinway Transit buses. Please feel free to provide updates and corrections; long live "the orange bus"!

Bob,

You don't have to make excuses for the superb work you do, and the many contributions you have made to our cause.

I'm certain the Alan Bromberger would be as proud as all the rest of us are with your 'Orange Bus' roster!

Very impressive!

One correction - RTS's #275-389 are model T80-206. I've found a few similar errors on the OMOT production lists (I see they are now showing these QSC buses correctly).

Otherwise, your list is a great start. Queens Transit, Steinway Transit and Queens Surface unfortunately never were written up by Alan. Perhaps we can build this roster here - in particular, QSC had quite a variety of second-hand buses when they started up and I'd love to see a list of these.

Jim, I think its a great idea, but will take some editing. I have some pictures of the "funky" equipment plus some posts from the previous 2 BT's.

According to BT1 poster Fishbowl 474 on a 1/10/03 post

1 - 20 deck & a half (PD-4107's ?) went from NYBS to QSC. One of them was renumbered 516 another one was renumbered 519 as per a J Canronetti picture on 3/90.

2 - QSC also purchased several older Fishbowls from NYBS

3 - The poster also thinks that QSC purchased between 7 and 10 1975 & 1976 TDH5308's from Liberty Lines transit that was replacing these LIberty Transit buses with new equipment.

4 - Several a few buses from Red & Tan, Rockland

5 - Several 35 ft Flx New Looks were purchased from CDTA in Albany. I remembered that these buses were blue and white. QSC only painted the fronts in the orange and cream livery and left the rest unpainted.6 -

6 - I have a picture of an MCI-9 in an all blue livery with a QSC sticker put on the side of the bus.... Still carries a fleet # of H 893. There is a NYBS fishbowl in the background at College Point.

7 - Another MCI-9 from Grayline is in full red livery. The QSC script ID decals are attached in the front and side. Fleet # 5883 in red numbers against the silver front.

8 - A non-A/C Fishbowl #91. Appears to be a 35-footer. The area around the windows are black from front to back. To the right of this bus is a fishbowl with fleet # 1311. The "3" appears to have been altered from another number. Both buses don't appear to have NYS license plates, alhough the picture is poor.

I hope that this is a start. I have other material / memorabilia to look through to add to this topic.

Last night I went through the 3 "Metro NY Area Mega Bus Calendars" that I have. I have the 1996, 1997 & 1998 editions that were produced by Joe Saitta.

There is a bus picture for each week, plus back & front cover pictures.

The following are additions to the above list.

Queens Transit

1981 - TDH 5301 numbered 324. This was a unique fishbowl since it had Classic Style, not Fishbowl windows.

1954 - TDH 5105 numbers 877 and 878. # 877 was eventually leased to Avenue B and East Broadway. ABEB just put their name on the bus. It was still in the white and orange livery. #878 was ex-Detroit Street Railway #1280

Qyeens Surface

? year - Gruman Flxible # 416 - Ex Steinway 416.

1970 - 11CDCD-05 (typo?) #496. This was ex-CDTA 403 & ex Command 197.

1980 T8H-603 # 200 ex Greater Bridgeport # 1807

? year - T8H-603 #197 - ex Greater Bridgeport. No fleet number noted.

1970 - 111DD-D5 # 497. ex-CDTA 402, then QSC 497 then CBC 198

Steinway Transit

1960 - TDH 4507 - #401

1972 - T8H 5308 A - #357

1975 - T8H 5308 A - #360

I didn't cross reference any of the captions with omot or any other source.

Thanks for that, Hart Bus!
I remember those TDH-5105's, numbered in the 880 range.
They looked like outsiders, since to my knowledge all other QTC Old Looks were 96" wide.
They also had some equipment not normally used by QTC: high mounted rear stop/turn signals (mounted just beneath the lower edge of the rear windows, instead of the red "lighted arrows" mounted in the middle of each engine compartment half-door); round front turn signals (instead of the amber "lighted arrows" normally used by QTC); full gauge complement (air pressure, speedo, oil pressure, voltmeter, water temp.; many QTC Old Looks just had the speedo, air gauge, and voltmeter); hand-operated turn signal lever mounted at the RH side of the steering column (instead of the foot-operated turn signal switches used on QTC buses); plywood interior roofing panels (QTC roof panels were hard plastic or painted metal).

In viewing the pictures in thw Queens Surface Section of this site, I note that there are several buses listed by RIPTA as being ex ST units.

They are 1985 GMC RTS - T8J 604

#'s 26, 29, 30,30,37,41,42

1986 GMC RTS - T8J 606

#'s 44,45,53

All buses retained their same fleet # when transferred over. Presumably the missing numbers were also given to buses.

I must say that after looking at the QTC rosters and all the subsequent notes that have been posted here it would seem as though the company had a rather checkered past when it came to buying, selling and trading equipment!

Green Line, on the other hand, was quite stable from day one and up through the sixties taking on only new buses (with the exception of three ex NYCTS coaches) and keeping a very standarized fleet (quite an important factor in the maintenance end of the business).

However, it may be that the operations of the two companies were not apples to apples, and that QTC found it to their advantage to coordinate their rolling stock as they did.

=I figured that I better post this data before I forget or misplace it.

Upon a casual review of OMOT's website the following ommissions are noted.

Steinway Transit

1980 Flx (870 D') Model 40102-8-1 S/N's 092837 to 56. Fleet 410 - 429

Queens Transit

1980 Flx (870 D's) Model 40102-8-1 S/N's 092794 to 839 Fleet 800-842.

Flx Metro Model 40102 - 6T S/n's ED095848 & 9 Fleet 860 & 861.

No similar order for ST

Does anyone have a list of the AM Generals that ST ran ?

According to Guy Martin's book, ST owned ten 1978 AM General 9640B-6 buses (401-410), which were retired by 1982.

Here's more info on those AMG's.
According to MCA (2/85), these units actually were Model 9640B-8, S/N 000431-000440, delivered April 1978.

Here's a bit more about Queens Transit predecessor Queens-Nassau Transit.

Before its conversion to GM, the operation was all ACF.

20-74 ACF H-16-S
81 ACF 45-S
101-120 ACF C-44

ACF 45-S #81 was the only unit of an order for six delivered to Q-N; the other five were diverted by the Office of Defense Transportation to AB&W in the DC area.

Thanks and best regards,
Vince

Did all of those second-hand 5105s come from Detroit Street Railways?
