W.B.:

Thanks again for the info.

I see that, by that last day, that the once-dominant RTS fleet was but a mere drop in the bucket, compared to what it was, back in the day. Sad

I STILL consider myself MOST fortunate indeed, 20-odd years back, that I got to ride ex-MTA "Torpedoes" on the old ACADENY "22". Wink

Ahhh, the memories............. Very Happy

"Slinkies"/"Wurlitzers"..........

Am curious as to what older buses did the "foist" generation of "Slinkies" replace (I know that late date, the last Fishbowls and "Dangerfields" had been all put out to pasture by that time)

What year did the first "Slinkies" enter service?

Is the "Em-Tee-Ay" currently now on their second or third generation of "Slinkies"? (2o25)

Thanks.........

Sounds to me like the initial order of those "Slinkies" would have dovetailed with the start of their "Select Bus Service" - the mid-to-late 2000's. I'd venture they're on their "toid" generation. I was on a "Slinky" in "da Bronx" and they had an older recording of "Please exit through the rear door" than is on the current "BINO's."

W.B.:

Thanks again!

"En-Jay-Tee" is also on their "toid" generation of "Slinkies"; the "foist" arrived in the late 1980s (*these were the mediocre "VOLVOS" were the the WORST!!! Razz

Next came the "NEOPLANS". which, I'll admit, WERE an improvment; today's lot are the "NEW FLYERS".

When Your's Truly retired. I remember that the "NEOPLANS" were just starting to come on-line.......

Flashback to 1996........

On Eyewitness News at 4, Chief Meteoroligist Lee Goldberg had a report about the massive January, 1996 blizzard that paralyzed the East coast (I could not get to work for two days!)

Lee also showed a really cool (head on!) photo of an "Are-Tee-Es" making its way down a street piled high with sizeable snowbanks (nice little treat!)

These now-iconic buses, were, IMHO, the last buses in the fleet that did not "wimp out" when the fluffy white stuff started to accumulate on the streets....... Wink

I would note that on SubChat, one person said that since the 1996 blizzard, no insurance company would offer any coverage for future blizzards. This person was one of the last to take out such a policy, before the snows of '96.

W.B.:

Your's Truly read that post earlier on the '96 blizzard today; regarding the RTS in "soivice" on "Noo Yawk"during that blizzard, at that time (1996) there were no such animal to be seen, here in "Joisey".

NJT still had some "Dee-oh-Tee" Dangerfields on some lines; METERO "Bs" dominated, and there were still two or three Fishbowls, soon to disappear) on the NHBL #1.

I recall one being an ex-Cleveland bus.

Plus, an ex-WMATA "Dangerfield" running on the NHBL #1.

ACADEMY was then running the "22" (and the "BOULEVARD EAST" line) with Metro "Bs"

It would not be until late in '97/early 1998 when I started to see RTS running on local NJT routes.

Syre was a long time ago.........

I was largely taking the subways to work and walking from it, but I have a vague memory of the "Torpedoes" being more plentiful on the roads than the newer "rolling milk cartons" already on our streets by then.

W.B.:

Here, the METRO "Bs" and "Torpedoes" always more than proved their worth through all but the heaviest snowfalls; all were good "snow buses", indeed!

After ONE "crack-the-whip" experience sitting in the rear of an NJT VOLVO, whenever I rose a "Slinkie" back then, when the roads were either snow0covered or slippery, I either sat (or rode) in the front ("puller") section.

ONE such experience was MORE than enough for Your's Truly, believe me!Shocked

I will NEVER forget the memorable sight of an NJT METRO "B" pulling a dead VOLVO artic up the STEEP Edgewater Road hill to Anderson Avenue (guess the tow truck based at the nearby Fairview garage was out on a call!)

A LOT of heavy-duty groaning, revving, and NOISE, BUT, the METRO "B" brought the disabled, sinewy "Slinky" back home!

This had to be at least 27 years ago! Shocked

WHAT A VIDEO This would have made! Wink

METRO "Bs".............

Hard to believe that it is now over 20 years since "En-Jay-Tee" replaced their faithful "Bs" with those oversized milk cartons, the "NABIS".

ACADEMY's are gone even longer.

Wonder how their replacements (now being delivered) will fare, snow-fighting wise?

IMHO, the only NJT buses that stand a chance at battling the fluffy white stuff are the MCUs (aka "Jersey Hounds")

Not surprisingly, the ex-MTA "Torpedos" that ACADEMY/NJT used on the "22" over 20 years ago seemed to be pretty tough customers.......

IMHO, the hard-working METRO "B" was the next-to-the-last, non-articulated transit bus rostered by NJT that was not afraid to take on the rigors of Old Man Winter...........
