Cyberider:

Oddly enough, none of the old "indy" companies I knew in Hudson County ever rostered any of these "new Old Looks"; they went straight from Old Looks to Fishbowls, in the later 1960s.

I agree; the "quad" headlights did not look well on these buses.

Again, I still think it odd that these new Old Looks reverted back to the original square windows, which dated back to the YELLOW COACH days.

Essentially (with the exception of those buses with quad headlights), you had a 1960s bus that looked like the ones being built prior to 1948............ Rolling Eyes

Here's a few glimpses of a 1946 TDH-4008 from the 1949 Mickey Rooney race car drama, "THE BIG WHEEL" (note, also, the comments posted by our late friend and legendary bus expert, Mr. Linsky)..............

I think these "modern" square window Old Looks were totally different than any previous Old Look. They were bodies on a separate frame, unlike the real Old Looks. They were referred by some as "Hydramatics" because they had the GM Hydramatic transmission. The Diesel engine models had a GMC "Toroflow" engine, which I believe was derived from the GMC V-6 gas engines. There's probably a thread on these buses somewhere on BusTalk. When I saw this bus in Modesto, I couldn't believe that a real square window Old Look was still in service anywhere, not knowing that these were built in the 60's.

The last real square window Old Look that I saw in Phoenix was in 1972 and I have a photo of it. It was parked at the main downtown stop but didn't appear to be in service and no driver in sight. I believe it was a 1947 model as Phoenix bought a batch at that time if memory serves me correctly.

Has it been forty years already?

During the early summer of 1986, the very last Old Looks in my immediate area (NHBL's #1 local) disappeared forever; these were the very same buses I grew up with, back in the 1960s.

Hard to believe that, in 2026, it will be forty years since I last rode an Old Look.....I miss them still, and always will.......... Crying or Very sad

Don't think I was fortunate to ever ride one in the 80's but did as much as I could in the 70's.

Cyberider:

That same year (1986) was also the year that the last Old Looks ran on the now-defunct Washington Street line (14 blocks long) in Hoboken; one was "30-X" (an ex-PS 4509, still painted in the PS two-tone green of the 1960s)

In fact, you could still see where the old PS insignias were located.

After 1986, the last handful of Old Looks had vanished from the streets of Hudson County........... Sad

The last year for seeing Old Looks on Washington Street in Hoboken (1986) was also the last year one could ride on an ex-PSNJ 4509, still wearing its 1960s two-tone green.

This nostalgic photo dates to 1970........

Further:

A large number of both transit and suburban Old Looks (New Jersey) were retired between 1976 and 1977, when nearly 900 new Flex New Looks (NJDOT) entered service.

With the exception of SOMERSET, the remaining Old Look suburbans were all gone by 1977.

The survivors were then indeed in the ultra-minority, but held on for for several more years, with the last disappearing (as mentioned previously) in 1986..........

This handsome Old Look, seem here at the Hoboken PATH/Erie-Lackawanna terminal at Hudson Place (photo taken 1972), originally ran in New York.

This bus (see photos) was purchased from an independent New York company, "GREEN BUS LINES" (now defunct)

I well remember this particular bus, in my much younger days! Wink
