Can somebody tell me the story odf the Edgewater depot? I understand it collapsed with buses going into the water. Perhaps a couple buses are still there at the bottom of the bay? |

Catfish,
Are you talking about Green Line's Rockaway garage in Arverne which has often been referred to as Edgemere?

I vaguely remember that. You are right in your response to Mr. Linsky that the pier was in Staten Island. I seem to think that not many buses went intothe drink but one was a loaner (leased) bus from Washington Metro. It was during the infamous Grumman Flxible 870-D, David Gunn era. |

I also believe that some of the deadlined Grummans were stored here and ended up in the water.

This article from the February 19, 1983 edition of the New York Times indicates that two buses went into the drink and that both were 15-year old vehicles that were slated to be scrapped. |

Jim,
Thanks for clearing up misconceptions that I had heard many years ago. It was probably wishing thinking that the Grummans should end up in the "drink".

The 2 buses that went into the water were Washington buses, 1 Flxible & 1 GM Fishbowl hence the reason that 1969 Flxible #4000 & 1968 GM Fishbowl # 8800 were given to WAMATA as replacements. These 2 actually ran for quite a long time down there. Also the original story was that kids playing got into the buses & released the emergency brakes
(which were hand operated on those models) and they rolled backwards into the water. The story that part of the pier collapsed was a TA story so that they would not be embarrased by what really happened. |

Thanks for the post Mr. Triplex. I thought that the buses that went overboard
were from Washington DC and jogging my memory about the handbrakes. Glad to see that my old brain hasn't yet made the acquaintance of that famous person Mr. Al Zheiimer. |

If the buses were going to be scrapped:
1) Why did NYCTA have to send two buses to WMATA in return?
2) Were they even WMATA buses that fell into the water, or is this urban (transit) legend? |
