(SEE PREVIOUS POST/LINKS)

B&QT rostered but one lone "Two Rooms"-type unit (#4900); it was a duplicate of the type which once roamed the streets in Boston.

Unlike Boston, however, the highly-unothodox "Two Rooms" concept died out without a whimper in Brooklyn...........

In this classic late 1930s scene, we see a "5000"-series car alongside an "8000"-series double-ended Peter Witt; this busy Brooklyn station (Williamsburgh Bridge Plaza) was adjacent to the elevated BMT subway line.....

Photo's of B&QR's pree-PCC experimental #5300 are rare.

These two views date to 1934; note the very early use of interior florescent lighting..........

Out of 100 B&QT PCCs were built by "ST. LOUIS"; car #1000 was the exception, built by "CLARK".

Here is a very rare view of the car being delivered to Brooklyn via rail........

Here's a very early view of PCC operation in Brooklyn; note the nattily-attired motormen posing with the car, for this early publicity shot...........

Another rare view from 1936; here we see PCC #1042 atop a PRR flat car, after being shipped from St. Louis (note the CNJ and NYC 40' box cars in the background)

Another unique PCC in the B&QT fleet was #1010; this car was interesting in that it was the only PCC in the fleet to feature a roof vent over the windshields which resembled those later used on Old Look buses........

Earlier, I'd mentioned PCC #1000; it was, as I've aleady mentioned, the only PCC in the B&QT fleet that was not built by St. Louis, but by "CLARK".

Note the more angular design of the car body, compared to the St. Louis-built cars; also, the standee windows..............

NYO,

Thanks for the PCC coverage. I find the pre-PCC experimental cars interesting. If I recall correctly, Chicago and Washington DC had some too. Don't remember ever seeing B&QT car 1010 with the vent above the windshield before. Wasn't the Clark car body made of aluminum?

Cyberider:

You are welcome! Wink

You are correct; the #1000 (CLARK) indeed had an aluminum body; PSNJ never operated any PCC demo (or experimental streamliner, for that matter)

However, I have seen ONE drawing for a "streamlined" PSNJ car from 1937; IMHO, it more resembled a BRILLINER than a PCC...........

The only other rolling stock buit by "CLARK" for New York were the BMT's lightweight "Bluebird" articulated rapid transit trains.

These sleek, flashy units were to be the forerunner of a larger fleet, designed to replace the elderly wooden El cars on the BMT's Brooklyn elevated lines.

Alas, only these few were built; they were OOS by the mid-1950s, and all were scrapped, still as modern as tomorrow........

This rare publicity photo shows a new "Bluebird" undergoing trials; prior to entering revenue service, it was also on public display at the BMT's massive (demolished after the BMT trains stopped running over the Bridge in 1944) Park Row elevated terminal, which extended out into City Hall Park...........
