Hershey (PA) trolleys..........
Just received a copy of "HERSHEY TRANSIT" ("IMAGES OF RAIL" series); this is an EXCELLENT little book on a trolley sysyem that is seldom discussed.
The system lasted until December, 1946, replaced by buses of the "HERSHEY COACH COMPANY", a subsidiary of the Reading Street Railway.
This system operated a VERY colorful, diverse fleet of cars throughout the decades (the deck roof cars were quite similar to those operated by PSNJ.
In fact, some photos indeed echo PS certain routes!
There was one lone "Birney" car (this was a modified one-of-a-kind car that was more modern in appearance than "conventional" Birneys)
It was known as "The Birney Car".
Thewre were also semis, combos, and box motors.
This book is one I highly recommend......

Some nice looking equipment. I wonder how many of these smaller systems there were that we don't know about? |

Indeed, after gathering the historic photos and historical records ( a formidable undertaking, indeed), it is easy to imagine a good-sized volume dedicated strictly to the country's smaller streetcar companies.
Indeed, you'll see QUITE a few of them in "TROLLEY CAR TREASURY" and "THE TIME OF THE TROLLEY".
IMHO, there are still so many small streetcar operations that have yet to be properly documented in print.....

Time for me to review these two books that have been in my library for 51 years, having inherited them from my Dad. I'm so used to seeing them on the shelf that I rarely open them since I've gotten more interested in specific aspects of the topic. |

Mom gave me "TROLLEY CAR TREASURY: for Christmas, 1962.....STILL in LIKE-NEW condition (I've ALWAYS treated my books with respect!) an, for Christmas, 1970, I received "THE TIME OF THE TROLLEY"
In BOTH books, you will be amazed at how many now-obscure streetcar systems once existed.
New Jersey, however, never had many, as what companies there were were swallowed up by PSNJ, early on............

Further......
Many years ago, at a railroad show, I picked up a small, spiral-bound book, entitled: "YORK COUNTRY TROLLEYS" (Benson W. Rohrbeck)
I paid $5.00 for my copy, back in the early 1980s; a VERY good deal, for sure!
The trolleys of this company were replaced by buses early in 1939; a quite diversified fleet of cars were on the roster (many rare photos)
The book was published in 1978.
The 7th chapter deals with the long0forgotten 'HANOVER & McSHERRYSTOWN Ry"Buses replaced the aforementioned cars early on, in 1932.
There are also chapters on the company's operations, as well as the car barns and shops.
If a copy can be found for a reasonable price, I would not hesitate to purchase it........it is an excellent little book!
