Hello bus fans, it's me again. This question is for Mr. Linsky or anyone else who can answer me (I only pick on Mr. L because he's a GBL historian). As far as I can remember, there were two Q10 buses, one that went straight down Lefferts Blvd. and made a left turn on Rockaway Blvd, then east to 131 St, then made a right and went south. The other one (via South Conduit) went past Rock Blvd, continued on Lefferts Blvd until South Conduit, then made a left and met up with the Q10 (via Rock Blvd) at 130 St and South Conduit on its way inside JFK Airport. Tell me please, how long have those two services been running? Thanks for all your help, GOD bless and may all of you have a very Happy Holidays!!!! |

Henry,
You've come to the right place!! (I love it when a plan comes together!).
Way back when (and I'm talking the thirties) there were three Q10 destinations and all of which originally began at Jamaica Avenue and Lefferts Boulevard but were extended to Queens Boulevard and 80th. Road in Kew Gardens upon the opening of the IND subway line in 1936.
One line signed for 'Old South Road' ran straight down Lefferts crossing Rokaway Boulevard and continuing to one block before North Conduit Avenue where it made a left to the next corner and then a right to North Conduit and a right again to layover at Conduit and Lefferts.
Old South Road was the name of the street before the water conduit was built.
The second line was signed for 'Hamilton Beach' and followed the same route as Old South Road but continued passed the Belt Parkway for about a mile down a dirt road to the tiny fishing village of Hamilton Beach.
This branch was created at the behest of the Board of Education so the few children in the village had a means of transportation to school - however, it could not be negotiated during strom tides!
The third was know as 'Richmond Hill Circle' and traveled Lefferts to Rockaway Boulevard where it turned left to 131st. continuing down almost to the end hanging a quick right and then a left again to 130th. Street and over the Belt to the School with a layover between the school and the sanitation department (hoping that the wind was blowing away from the sewage treatment plant!).
In 1948, upon the opening of the then Idelwild Airport (now JFK), a fourth line was created following the same route as Richmond Hill Circle and continuing into the airport proper.
The Conduit airport connection came about after my time just as the JFK express from Kew Gardens did and I cannot tell you exactly when those additional services began.
What I can do though is show you one of the first Green Line buses to run Q10 upon purchasing the Richmond Hill and Travelers Bus Companies back in 1934 (below).
Thanks for your inquiry.

Excellent report, Mr. Linsky. I was unaware that there was no bus service on Lefferts through Kew Gardens prior to the 1936 opening of the Queens Blvd. IND. I would think that the turnaround routing at Jamaica Ave. was at Myrtle, 117 St, Jamaica Ave. then back on Lefferts.
I would also guess that the nearby Q37 was routed to the Union Tpke. IND station around that same time. |
